Should I go to UW if I hate rainy/cloudy days?

I'm from a sunny city where rain only lasts for a day or so, and cloudy, gloomy days just put a damper on my mood and makes me lose concentration and just want to sleep...I love UW but I'm afraid I will get extremely homesick for constant sunshine.

I lived in Seattle my whole life. Any time I go to a different state it feels like heaven. You will get used to the sun, because it comes every couple of weeks. but in the winter it rains and rains and rains. You only get summer 2 weeks in August and umm, yeah rain never stops. Most of the time it’s wet on the ground and sprinkling.

outside, it’s sprinkling rain outside.

I wouldn’t say that it rains a lot in Seattle (trust me, as a person who works outside 40hrs/week, I know the weather quite well). It does occasionally, but most of the time it’s just cloudy…

Katmo, if I were you I wouldn’t go to UW. It took me a couple of years to adapt to Seattle’s weather (i’m from very warm places originally). However, YOU CAN fix the effects of the weather on your mood with pills and a light box.

Hate is a strong word. The situation is all about attitude. If you say you hate it then you will find a reason to hate it.

Hmmm, I’m wondering about this too! I like UW (but UT Austin has more sunshine)!

Washington is the only state where suicide is more common than murder, according to my health teacher.

The constantly overcast skies / rain is definitely the reason why.

That being said, I’ve lived here for 12 years and I love it. The thing about summer coming 2 weeks a year in August is untrue. The sun starts to come out between March and April, and late May - late August is almost always sunny.

^^^That’s a good sign!! People don’t get murdered here!!!^^^

I’m told that UW, UTA and CU-Boulder all have a similar vibe and that people who liked one would like the others.

Did they forget to tell you all of the serial killers?!

What do you mean, all of the serial killers? That stuff is from before most of us were born.

I can’t speak for the serial killer part but as for the weather I’ve lived in the northwest for my entire life (only 18 years but still…) And I can say that the weather here isn’t as bad as everyone thinks. Yes it gets rainy in the winter but its not deathly cold and most of your experience will be indoors anyways. Plus about mid-April the spring starts to pick up and there’s much more sunshine. Bottom line is that you shouldn’t choose/not choose a college because of its weather.

I am from southern california. weather here is definitely overblown, it’s not that bad. i assume you have visited seattle and like it? If so i wouldn’t choose not to come here based solely on weather. you will get used to it just as you get used all other different things that come with moving away to college.

Ok thanks everyone! I’m visiting Seattle next week but I’m almost positive I’m committing to UW-Seattle  I’m sure I’ll be able to adapt, and most of my time won’t be outdoors anyway. College is all about new experiences, right?

Seatac it has rained every day this week & yesterday it just DUMPED! Are you in Seatac?

Well, it has, but it’s not a trend. I’m in Seattle.
It did rain for quite a long time before though.

the weather here is gray, and lots of drizzly days. I’m from Seattle so I don’t mind. But the summer is the best there is, so stick around if you can.

And in response to an earlier post, the suicide statistic is absurd. Seattle isn’t even in the top ten cities in suicide rate, and almost EVERY state has more suicides than murders. Suicide is more common than murder, believe it or not. I believe Maryland, DC, and maybe Virginia are the only states where there are more murders than suicides.

I went to visit campus a couple of days ago, and it was raining on-and-off. I’ve lived in Washington for over 13 years, but that really turned me off. Walking to class in the rain! I mean, even with umbrellas, it gets annoying. The campus is really pretty though…

I agree,it is a beautiful campus.
Many of the buildings are attractive & then there are the trees!

Weather should not be the only factor in you decision. I think if you really want to attend UW then you will adapt to the rainy Seattle. I would say its more cloudy than rainy. But summer is always beautiful.
