Currently a CO resident. I like both schools but I’m not sure if Cal Poly is worth OOS tuition for a business degree
What the total cost differential between the two? What kind of business will you study?
Also, do you plan to stay in CA or return to CO? If you know you want to go back to CO for sure, I would assume a degree from CU would likely serve you better.
Tuition is 44k more over four years at Cal Poly. (11k scholarship for CU, 1k for CP)
I will likely study finance but I’m not sure yet.
I’m not sure where I want to stay after college. I was born in California and raised in Colorado. My dad still works out in California and it would be nice to have some connections he could hook me up with. Not many connections in Colorado besides my friends, but I love the geographic areas equally.
The reason why cal poly appeals to me is because I was accepted to “Pre-Business” at CU Boulder, while I was accepted straight into the b-school at Cal Poly. Also Cal Poly seems to be a more selective school, while CU Boulder seems to have let in pretty much everyone in my high school. I also have 11 ap credits which should hopefully cut costs.
I’m more concerned about which school will set me up better for a career, while still being a good investment.
FWIW - I’m just an old guy offering some opinions:
Cal Poly grads hire well into both So Cal & No Cal (and beyond). CU is the state flagship and the state is packed with CU alums (I spent a few years at CU before you were born). Both are good schools.
Maybe a coin toss at the same price. Not sure I’d pay an extra $44K for Cal Poly, but then again, I once paid OOS tuition at CU for a couple years.
Also, factor in your travel costs and time. Cal Poly is far from any major airport (3+ hours probably).
Maybe do some more homework on how much those APs would help, numbers might look better if you can finish in under 4 years.
