I know this is a common thread. But, I was recently accepted as a transfer student at FSU (a sophomore w/o AA). However, I've been studying facts and it seems UF is an all around better known and better academic school. I hope to eventually go to med school, so my undergraduate university really matters.

I was wondering if I should stay at my current school (FIU) for another two semesters and then transfer to UF or go to FSU in the fall. Should I even consider transferring to UF? Is it really that much better?

I'm a Psychology/Neuroscience major btw.

Thanks!

Also, reasons for staying at FIU include: my boyfriend is there, good friends, better nightlife, beaches
But, my best friend goes to FSU and FSU has a much more attractive campus

So, you come on the FSU forums.
Tell us, that facts seem to say UF is more popular, better academically.
I wonder how many will agree to such a statement.
Then, say FIU has superior nightlife. Certainly don’t have as many clubs as a larger city like Miami, but FSU night life is of a different experience than 20$ cover and 10$ drinks.

One thing that I would add is that a huge amount of people start out by majoring in Psychology and then switch majors (I did this myself). I would keep this in mind and think about other strengths that each school has and how they fit your needs.

The difference between FSU and FIU is far greater than FSU and UF.

Per US News:

For Psychology, UF is ranked 45 in the nation while FSU is ranked 50.
For Biological Sciences, UF is ranked 46 in the nation while FSU is ranked 92.

The reputation difference between UF and FSU exists only in the state of Florida. This isn’t bias, but now based on personal experience as well. Both schools are just public schools in Florida. Unless you want to go to UF for med school, the difference between the two is negligible.

Parent2noles has a really high maturity level.

naxxoo, I believe you should visit both campuses and speak to advisors to see which school is best for you. I got into both UF and FSU and ultimately chose to attend UF this fall. I am a transfer student with an AA seeking a Biology degree.

I did visit both campuses prior to my decision and I just loved the look and feel of UF’s campus. On top of that the advisors were awesome and my credits transferred smoothly. I am planning to graduate in a year and a half with my degree. I haven’t experienced nightlife since I have not moved down there yet but I heard there is plenty to do (and I bet there’s lots to do at FSU as well). It’s just a matter of preference. Go visit and decide for yourself.
Good luck!

Actually this one area (posting about rival universities) does not require complete seriousness and can endure just a bit of fun. Since I graduated from Florida State long ago and have already raised two kids who now have also graduated from FSU I figure I have at least an inkling of not only how to do it but also to pay for it - several times over. Drop me a note when you have achieved something close to this and then let’s compare notes on rival campus irreverence and required online demonstrations of maturity. I’ll be all ears (so to speak). ;)

Florida State University - THE university of Florida.

You’re going to graduate school? So undergrad doesn’t matter as much as you think especially between two universities such FSU & UF. Both are great schools and have a lot to offer.
I highly recommend visiting both schools and meeting with advisors. You’ll get a better feel for it. Whichever you choose just make sure you do very well. I think undergrad uni’s only make a huge difference to graduate schools if you’re choosing a school for undergrad between an Ivy vs a state public school. Then I’d say yeah it makes a huge difference, but between UF & FSU not that much. Just pick the one you feel will be the right fit for you and will give you what you’re looking for in a Uni.

More like unpaid and unofficial advocate. I support the university. It was a good investment decades ago and still is today. This is what alumni who care about their alma mater do. We advise, we inform. (We also send money…) I am very proud of the younger Florida State students here who step up and answer questions, post informative links and are great references, by the way.

Now, if you really want to be serious about which university to attend (of these two) you need to learn the actual strengths and weaknesses of the schools and not pay much attention to sales hype. Hype gets you nothing and doesn’t last. A good education will pay for itself for the rest of your life - assuming you use at least some economic analysis in your choices. Art history may have a lot of passionate graduates, but wow, what a tough field in which to find a solid career.

Passion counts, however. It’s everything and employers want it maybe above almost all else. Passion drives those who would be medical doctors and PhDs. Such goals are otherwise too difficult for the uncommitted.
