Should I have a chance to submit my art portfolio?

My portfolio isn't ready because I don't know if a should submite it but I need honest advices about my art work. I don't want a major in art but I know that an art portfolio will increase my chances getting into a good college.

Franchesca2095,

Your links don’t work, at least they don’t work for me. But I want to let you know that I think you might be misinformed on including artwork in your application as a means of boosting your chances at top schools. Most of the time this line of thinking backfires so be careful.

This plan will work if your art is at the level of accepted freshmen art majors at your target school. It has to be that strong because your supplemental art app will most likely be judged by the art department even though you aren’t applying to their department. Joe over in Admissions won’t know what he’s looking at so he’ll send it to Maria in the school of art for her opinion. Suddenly now you have to get thumbs up from both Joe and Maria. See what I mean here kiddo? Be careful.

Like I said, your links don’t work so I can’t see your art and maybe it’s great, but know this: art is not a backdoor into college. In fact, it’s the opposite - it’s a second door and it comes with a pretty stout lock.

Best,
Wheaty

not so fast Wheaty dear
OP never said aiming for Yale Brown Columbia, but just “good colleges”
some good colleges, nice remote-y small-sh LACs, maybe, would like to see kids who do things just for fun (read: well rounded, multi facaded, creative innovative (magic words!)) assuming academics are in good range and artworks are not, what is that, everyone hate? oh manga!!!

then again, maybe OP is aiming for Yale?
in that case listen to what Wheaty says, you can list art as your fav. EC but if your portfolio is not the kind of somewhat winning Scholastic or Youngarts awards, it is safer not to show off.

then then again, if we can’t see your works, all we have to say at this point is,
can you link it in other way that is going to work?
It is always good idea to check and double check if receiving ends can open your files if you are ever going to send anything to show.

Hi Bears,

Did I jump the gun again? Yeah I guess so. Dang it.

This plan isn’t unique to the OP and I probably reacted to this because of another HS senior that I ran into a few weeks ago. His plan was to include snapshots from his summer vacation as a means of ‘pimping the appy’ (his term, not mine) to NYU. I just looked at that arrogent little tool and blinked. Good luck with that son.

So you’re right my friend, it depends on the art and which target schools.

Sorry Franchesca2095, I’ll do better next time!

Best,
Wheaty

PS. This is the 3rd thing I’ve gotten wrong today and it’s only 8:40 AM. Gonna be a long day I think.

oooowwww
DO TELL what advice you’ve given to that little tool!!
