Should I have got in?

GPA 3.59 SAT 800 math 550 reading 650 writting
Major math

I'm not sure if Math is an impacted major there, but your SAT Score is pretty good and your GPA is right there. I got into the business major with a slightly higher GPA, but about 200 points less on the SAT.

Did you have good EC's? A friend of mine got rejected from the same major as me and had much better stats than me; but he had literally no EC's.

i got in as a math major. my stats were 1600 sats, 3.56 gpa and very good ec's/

im convinced that because their application process is so impersonal, they resorted to picking out of a hat. some of the people who got in at my school are so underqualified, it makes me want to puke.

while I don't want to necessarily puke at this thought, it is fairly random with what I've heard so far of who got in and who was rejected. one opinion that I've also heard was that they might be rejecting over-qualified people because they know a student of that caliber would get into better schools as well and not even go to cal poly, thus freeing up a spot for someone who has cal poly as a first choice. this made sense to me, but I can't imagine the admissions office doing this. sorry to hear the news nate

Cal Poly SLO's admissions criterion are way too weird for me. I really wouldn't waste time conjecturing whether you should have gotten in or not. It seems to me like they're trying to become more selective in an effort to raise rankings.

that sucks.. wow, i guess they're getting a lot harder on you guys

Just a thought---Cal Poly is one of the few (if not the only) CSU's that look at work experience in the field you applying and volunteer hour. D got admitted with stats at the lower end of their average (bus adm) however she had 2 years work experience in an accounting firm and 300 hour of community service on top of 2 varsity sports and a couple of clubs in which she was an officer. So maybe they actually look at the entire picture.

If you look at the college of science and math averages, students selected had a gpa around 3.9. Maybe it was your gpa?

Your GPA was too low.

I have heard cal poly doesent really even bother with extra curriculars...ECs are apparently worth 3% of ur application. How do colleges verify you worked in your major or what not?

I also had work experience in the major I was applying for. I've been interning at a hedge fund for almost a year now. I applied as either an economics major or business administration major and got in. Friend of mine with better stats was denied to the same major as me, maybe my internship and other EC's helped a lot?

I went to their open house last year to visit the campus and someone from admissions said they use work and ec's to see how well students can handle school responsibilities and outside responsibilities at the same time while maintaining good grades. I also think when these relate to your major it shows you have more dedication to that major and a more realistic idea of what the career requires. They probably figure you are more likely to stay in that major and actually finish your degree.

being dislegsic expains the 550 in reading....
800 in maths not good enough

I got an 800 in math
I got a 790 on the SAT for math, i odnt know how i should of got 800

if i went to any other school my gpa would be higher

plus I played varsity basketball for 2 years and track

and did community service so....

its not fair, i will appeal my descison of course

I got in..but here are my stats...

GPA 3.7 (un) 4.0 (w)
ACT -24 and 23 (came out to be a 25, since they take the best score from each catagory)

info i did not submit...
SAT 1530
Math 2c- 560
US History -460

you should have gotten in.. more respect needs to be given for those who can ace the math section of the SAT.. considering your major was math, you definitely should have gotten in
