I've sent an email to the Duke admissions office to withdraw my place. They haven't replied yet, but I'd just like to ask this in advance - should I include that I accepted a place at Duke this year, but withdrew because of financial reasons? I AM applying for financial aid this season. Would they frown upon that previous Duke place? Would it hurt me if they infer that I applied to Duke last year and not them?

You’ve mentioned in other threads that you used a gap year that Duke offered you to try to apply to other colleges. That’s how you described the situation, and that is not going to look good to other colleges.

Oh, good point, I hadn’t thought of that. It was really because of financial difficulties that I withdrew - I’m sure thats how i described it. would it be less bad if i mentioned its due to financial reasons, and that I withdrew from Duke before applying?

it’s a little irrelevant, but it’s not exactly a gap year, it’s conscription.

Don’t mention it. No one other than Duke is going to care where you got accepted before. It’s a new application and a clean slate. Mentioning it can only hurt you.

Oh alright. Well I was just being cautious in case they were expecting me to declare that. Thanks guys, you saved my app :D

In the same vein, Duke obviously knows I’m gonna re-apply to other colleges - would they try to sabotage my chances by spreading the word about my withdrawal?

I see.. Well, I hope it’s for the best. I can’t attend Duke or even come to America for college at all without financial aid, and government scholarships are equally tough. Hopefully everything turns out better this time. :)

Hey, I was just wondering - would colleges actively try to find out where I’ve applied before or where I’ve accepted a place before, even if my app doesn’t suggest anything I’ve even applied before? Alternatively, do they share lists of those kind of information?
