I read a lot of people stating that I should put my step mother’s financial info on my fafsa but i’m considering not to. The reason is because my father moved to Oklahoma this year, and my step mother lives in Florida. They are not divorced, nor separated but we do not live together. She has a daughter and three grandchildren and a son-in-law who lives with her and she pays all the bills, and is the custodial parent for her eldest grandson. I lived with her at a point in time, but presently it’s just my brother, my dad and I in Oklahoma. I am not dependent on her, she does not pay or help pay for anything, and my dad and mom got divorced over 8 years ago but separated over 18 years ago. So I am wandering if to include her, also, I applied last year for fafsa, but there was a problem with her taxes and she refused to fix it causing an error in our application, I’m trying to avoid that from happening this time, and seeing that i’m not dependent on her, I don’t need to include her…
Does your dad still consider himself married? If not they should probably be considered separated and should be filing as Head of Household rather than married.
they may not be 'legally separated" thru the courts, but do they consider their marriage to be “over” since they are now living separately?
What status did your father put on his most recent tax returns?
