Hi, I signed up for the forum specifically to ask this question, as a search proved quite fruitless.
I enjoy collecting firearms, studying them, and going target shooting when I have the time.
Would it be wise to list this as an EC? I'm worried that, in light of tragedies such as Columbine, VTECH, etc, the admissions officers might have an aversion to accepting somebody with an interest in firearms.
What are CCer's thoughts on this? Should I tell list this as one of my ECs, or should I leave it out?

Thanks a lot.

Columbine, VTECH etc. were all totally the first thing that popped into my head. Not everyone who has an interest in guns is a complete nut. I think it’s interesting. I know some of the colleges I’m applying to have gun-related sports and clubs (then again, I live in Florida…) However, I do know they absolutely, positively, 100% would never allow a weapon on campus, in dorms or cars. I don’t know of any college off the top of my head that does, but I’ve never even considered that an issue for me. I can’t imagine you could take your collection with you unless you live off-campus.

I would think the best thing to do would be to play up the athletic side of it.

Thanks for the reply.
I wouldn’t think of bringing my collection with me! Those are staying with my dad, who is happy to keep them .
I believe you have a point about emphasizing the athletic aspect of target shooting. I think that’s what I’ll do. I was simply worried because I live in SoCal I’m applying to UC’s and other colleges in CA, and I know from personal experience just how rampantly hoplophobic people can be here.

You’re welcome. :)

I imagine California might be a little more tricky with guns. I’m applying to Berkeley myself. But yep, I’d see where that takes you.

Good luck!

Target shooting-Gun Collecting

How important is to you? If you are a staunch proponent of the Second Amendment, and would feel uncomfortable going to a place where people who favor gun control would look down or ostracize you because of your beliefs then I would definately INCLUDE it in your application. Would you really want to go to a place that views this issue as so important that they would reject your application because of it.

Besides, since most schools (especially the liberal ones) strive for diversity, I think it is actually unlikely that this would be held against you. If anything, assuming you could work this in), you might make a statement that of course you would never bring a firearm to campus, and feel that doing so would be wholly inappropriate.
