Should I Include This Extracurricular in the Activities Section?

Hey guys. Another quick question. So I’ve been debating what should be included in my Activites Section, and so far I’ve settled on five solid ones that I knew I would always include. My question is: should we put in ec’s that we no longer participate in, but that we participated in for many years before? For context, I took karate for 7-8 years from the age of 4 to 11-12 (will determine actual age in a bit). I received my black belt, but then I moved to a different town and determined that I no longer wanted to keep participating in karate so I could focus on other things. However, I recognize it held a big position in my early childhood (was by far my most important activity in childhood), and I feel like by not mentioning it, I’m neglecting a huge accomplishment that colleges should see (especially considering that I did no serious sports ec’s in high school). Should I include this as an activity in the Activities section, or should that section only be restricted to high school activities? I feel if nothing else it wouldn’t hurt to put in a sentence or two about it in the Additional Information section if nothing else, but I’m not sure. Is it worth mentioning at all? Thanks.

It should be worked into one of your essays.

@1golfer1 Do you have any particular recommendation of which essay to put it into? It has no place in my commonapp essay. And there is really no essay that it would work well with. If you had to pick between the either the Activities Section, the Additional Information Section, or neither, which would you choose?

You don’t put activities and hours completed for pre-HS. But you might list it as an award/honors where you don’t have to pt hours. Otherwise list it in additional information.

@BrownParent Okay. I guess then it should be put in the Additional Information Section (it couldn’t go in the awards/honors section as that is restricted for academics). Should I also include the hours in the additional information section as well? Or should I just say 7 years and earned black belt?

I don’t think you should put hours in. Everyone knows it is a lot of work and hours and years. Just put a statement. Like you are proud to have worked hard and attained a Black Belt in Karate at age of X, and anything else short you want to say about it.

@BrownParent Thanks! Good to know.
