Hi guys, so I am an incoming freshman at Penn, and I have been wondering about the Greek life situation at Penn for a while now...

I realize that it is only about 30% of students that go Greek, but it feels as though everyone I have met so far (at least the girls) are in a sorority. They tend to always say the same thing, "Yeah, I didn't think it was for me either...but now I love it!" And stuff of that sort.

The thing is, like most students at Penn, I am going to be very very focused on my academics. I understand that Greek life is not meant to ruin that. But I also am studying to be Pre-med, and hope to finish my Pre-med requirements at the end of Junior year so that I can go straight from undergrad to Medical school. This obviously is no easy feat, and will take a lot of time, planning, and plain old hard work on my part.

I ask about sororities because I honestly, have never seen myself as a sorority girl. I am girly, friendly, pretty, all of those things....but I have never been the type to strive to be part of a group. I've always been my own person, and I hate being directed by the likes of others. THe problem is, I also don't want to feel like a social outcast. If I'm going to feel completely left out all the time by not going Greek, then I would hate that too.

Do sororities take up a lot of time? Are people looked down upon by not being in one? Someone with experience, please let me know.

Thank you so much,
