I’ve been invited to the Coastal Carolina University honors program. Should I join if I know that I will be transferring out of Coastal Carolina after my freshman year to somewhere like Clemson? I have an ACT of 28 and I know the only reason I didn’t get accepted to Clemson was because of my 9th and 10th grade GPA, which was like 2.5 or something ridiculous. My junior year and senior year my lowest grade was a 94, with my senior year being all honors and AP classes a long with taking 4 classes at a local community college while doing high school senior year at the same time, earning A’s in all of those classes.
Just wondering if it’s worth it to join the honors program for 1 year. There are no financial benefits of joining the program.
Well, what are the benefits? Early registration? (That’d be a huge plus - especially since you’re a freshman and frosh get last pick.) Smaller class sizes? (That’d be a huge plus too - you could better communicate with a professor who might be able to write you a letter of recommendation for your transfer.) More interesting coursework?
There is no early registration, although I do have the first orientation, so I’ll be able to get pretty much any class I wish. I will be driving there since I live within 50 miles of the university, so I won’t be having a dorm. It is only 1 honors class a semester, with the first semester being a honors 101 course, so essentially only 1 real honors course. I think I’ll be able to get in Clemson regardless of whether or not I join the honors program, as these classes will likely be very easy for me considering the average act for the school is a 21 and I have a 28. I just can’t see the benefits of joining the honors program.
Don’t overthink it; if it’s more of a hassle than anything, don’t join. But if there are any actual benefits that are relevant to you and your transfer, then join.
I would say you should join…you usually are in some classes with others that generally want to learn, you get easier access to professors, you may get preference in classes or dorms, you may get opportunities for special programs. The good thing about honor is it easy to drop out…more difficult to get back in.
