Should I join Phi Theta Kappa?

I'm already doing TAG/IGETC to transfer to UCSD. And I'm already getting an AA from my community college with a diploma that should mention honors due to my GPA. My question is, would it still be worth it for me to spend the $75 to join Phi Theta Kappa? UCSD doesn't give scholarships for PTK as far as I know, but I'm thinking maybe some future employer will see that on my r

Why not? It will only add to EC’s especially if you became more involved with it. I understand youre looking into UC’s which offer no scholarships for PTK members, but maybe it will help later in life if you ever decide to continue with your education.

PTK doesn’t mean anything to future employers. The four year honor society…phi beta kappa…is what matters.

Here’s my standard response:

Join PTK for the scholarship opportunities and the social/community aspect of the group. It will not boost your chances for transfer.

Note: As is normal with these types of threads, there will undoubtedly be posters who will make some great claims about PTK (e.g. it will definitely help you transfer, get you into a specific university, etc.). Many times they will profess to be chapter officers, professors, or college administrators. They will usually be new posters. Note the number of posts and their join date information. If the post number is low or they have only recently joined, they are most likely public relations for PTK who regularly ■■■■■ the boards.

I have nothing against PTK. It is a fine organization. I became a member a few years ago. Membership just isn’t a factor in the admissions process (unless you take up an officer role - which you can’t as you are already a sophomore). Having a high GPA (one above the PTK minimum requirement) is usually good enough depending on the institution and major you’re looking to transfer into.

@Investment: PBK isn’t all that important in the long run… but you do get to wear the snazzy pink and baby blue (well, sky blue anyway) cords at graduation.

Thanks for answering, guys. I decided not to sign up, and I will consider it again, if I can, in the Spring.

SH4D0WZ, I’m not sure what you mean by “It will only add to EC’s…” Eye candy? Electron capture? Do members get non-transfer scholarships to other schools? I am thinking of going for an MBA later, but the school I am interested is also not listed as a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship school.

Can anyone else back that up that employers don’t care at all about Phi Theta Kappa?

CalBear2009, since I’m not interested in its social aspect, it will not help me transfer, and UCSD doesn’t give scholarships for members, are you saying I just shouldn’t join?

Thanks again guys.

@macosxp: EC’s are ‘extra curriculars.’

If you’re not interested in socializing or being involved with group projects it really wouldn’t benefit you to join. You really wouldn’t list it on your curriculum vitae for a grad program.

hey. guys. I have a question about PTK…actually I pay $65 to join the PTK, but I haven’t been to the meeting or any activities in PTK. so should I put i’m PTK member in my personal statement? what can I do for it? thx

If you haven’t been active there isn’t a reason to include it in your personal statement. Space is limited and your membership in PTK should be listed on your transcript.
