Should I join student council?

I'm currently a freshman; a year ago I started a thread on this forum, utterly depressed that I hadn't made it onto my high school's student council. Now this year one of the 2016ers on the student council has decided to quit next year and nobody is running to replace him. Should I join? Student council counts as an actual class, and I'd be getting rid of AP stats to make room for it.

well, that depends. do you want to join and get rid of stats or would you rather not join and keep stats? what’s your preference?

I want to be in student council, enough to get rid of stats. The thing is, I’m a little hesistant because the reason why the kid is quitting is because the sponsor is terrible. She’s new and this is her first year and all the student council kids hate her. However, they’re trying to get their old sponsor back (she had to stop because they needed her to teach more math classes) and they think she’ll be back by my junior year. I’ve almost idealized student council and I don’t want to end up hating it and having wasted a class.

Also, if I joined, I would be a class representative, not treasurer or secretary or anything. But I suppose I could work my way up. I also have one concern - it’s okay to join a new extracurricular your sophomore year, right? I know it doesn’t look as good, but I really do like student council. Or at least, I think I will.

joining a new extracurricular sophormore year is fine. as for your situation, you’re going to have to weigh the risks. would you be able to enjoy student council at all even if the sponsor is horrible?

I know student council is different at every school, but at mine the students lead all the meeting and plan all the events. Our sponsor just “watches” and “approves” things. I think that you may want to ask someone who is in student council right now how much the sponsor is actually involved.

To know if you’ll enjoy it I would suggest asking to sit in on a meeting. Just sit and watch, see how it goes!
