My college offered me membership in their Honors program. I am already doubled majoring (Bio and Spanish) and am unsure if taking on another 27 credits would be wise for me. I know Medical schools look at what classes you take and what grade you get in the class, so would Medical schools really care if I did or did not join the program? I guess what I am asking is do Medical schools LOVE to see applications with Honors? Between double majoring and a 48 credit core curriculum, I am worried I will not graduate in four years. I would ideally like to graduate in four years (I do not want to pay for another year and have to pay for medical school as well) Any feedback is appreciated.
As to academics, med schools expect an applicant to have a bachelors degree in an area of applicant’s choosing, taken premed reqs, all the while having competitive GPAs. If one double majors, takes on additional workload of Honors program that is because you choose to do so, not because med school’s asked. So go ahead but you won’t get bonus points for less than competitive GPAS because you decided to over burden yourself. Actually having taken on so much and done poorly might make someone question your decision making ability. I’ll guess you’ll need 3 months to prep for MCAT squeezed among your double majors and honors reqs. Where do you plan to prep into your schedule?
In addition, assuming you have competitive GPAs and MCAT, med schools will absolutely expect your app to show that you have the qualities that they believe an MD should have (eg altruism, compassion, ability to work with others, etc) by looking at your ECs, Lors PS. Where do you plan to squeeze in say ECs?
Do you plan to sleep, have a college life, or are you just locked away in your room studying?
IMO, unbutton your shirt, if you see a big “S” on your undershirt and can leap over tall buildings in a single bound, and plan on producing a competitive app and graduating in 4 years, I’d make sure you have a plan B because adding the Honors reqs has much more downside and little, if any, upside, Med schools LOVE to see a competitive app (eg competitive app and MCAT, ECs, etc), One doesn’t have to overburden, over stress one self to produce a competitive app. Good luck,
Check whether the honors requirements don’t overlap with the core and other campus requirements.
What year will you be?
Thank you for the responses! Jugulator20, that makes a lot of sense. I was already not too keen on taking on the extra work (I’m not very interested in the classes I would have to take), so the only reason I would’ve done the honors program was because medical schools liked it. Thanks! and MYOS1634, I will be a sophmore. I did look it up and the program does complete requirements for SOME core classes, but it also adds on new classes.
