The schools I am applying to all use common app and require 1 - 2 recs. Right now I plan to ask four of my profs just because I am afraid someone will forget and they won't get in. I figure if I double down there is a better chance they will all make it in. But now I am worried that they will all get them in and the admissions committees will be upset that I sent too many. Is four too many?

You should check/contact each individual school for their policy on sending reqs. Stanford, for example, is very clear that they only want 2 professor letters, and nothing more.

Generally, however, anything above 2x the required is considered too much. So as long as it’s no more than 4, you’re fine. You should also make sure that each professor has something good to say. A bad recommendation could be more detrimental to your chances than no recommendation at all.

It’s your responsibility to make sure that your teachers send or write the letters. Ask two if you want , then remind the professors nicely that they need to send the letters soon.

Yes, please only ask two. Then follow up. Provide stamped envelopes. Check with the colleges, after a reasonable period of time, to be sure they have arrived. If not, follow up with the prof.

That’s what I decided to do. I went to see my two “main” ones today and they were both very enthusiastic about doing a rec for me. So I don’t think I have anything to worry about.
