Should I just give up? UCLA from LAVC advice on essay, and whether or not I should change major

Hi all,

I'm completing my requirements for transferring to UCLA and I am a Computer Science major. I am in TAP, have a website for my projects (I do arduino and devices in relation to medical devices) and do freelance coding and writing projects on the side (4 papers and 1 game), and I have won an ATMEL contest for design on hardware and the inner workings of a device using their products. These are all things I plan on mentioning (somewhere? any advice on how and where?). Last year about 5 people in my family died and I got a C in one of my classes (I don't know if I should mention this however?...seems inappropriate...I don't want to come off as excusing anything).

I have 2 missing prerequisites, PHYSICS 38 + 39 (I am taking 37 this Spring). These are the only prereq's I am missing (I read that Chemistry is not required?). I took AP physics in HS, got a B but did not pass the AP test.

a) Can I and b) Should I :

1) change my major so I can use my TAP towards the Letters and Sciences
2) forget about UCLA completely
4) Go to UCI or UCSB (if accepted) and then transfer to UCLA
3) apply to UCLA and also to other campus's

Thank you all for any and all help, I really appreciate anything

*edit to overall

I am going to apply for Fall 2015

*edit to 1)

1) change my major if I can ? what can I change it to? so I can use my TAP towards the Letters and Sciences

DO mention your family circumstances.

What’s your GPA?

If you’re missing those prereqs and there’s no way you can make them up to use your TAP, then yes you should switch to another major (Applied Math? With a CS minor???) You should also apply to UCI/UCSB/UCSC for CS to plan for everything.
Good luck, and let us know how it turned out - it’ll be very useful to the website readers, many of whom come from CA.

Transfer to UCLA Computer Science had 1% acceptance rate. Do apply but add more schools. UCLA is not the only school that Computer science is taught.

Hey thanks a bunch for this great advice!

@MYOS1634‌ Okay, I will mention this, wasn’t sure if I should but I will now.

I think my GPA will be a 3.9 / 4.0 ? I plan on getting all A’s this semester and thankfully, for once, this isn’t an overestimation on my part. I am deciding to go with Applied Math with a minor in CS, it’s perfect and I get to use my TAP this way :’-) . Thanks for saving me a night filled with me pulling my hair, but I think this route is A+ for me. I will definitely update everyone with how it all goes so people can learn from my mistakes and use the advice I got from others.

Also @DrGoogle‌
Yeah i know! It’s ridiculous and you’re absolutely right, UCLA is not the only school. In fact I think the computer science department at UC Davis is better? Too bad it’s so far :frowning: ! But yes I will apply to UCLA and apply to a bunch more as well.

Hey everybody, a quick little update for those who are curious

I am changing my major to either Mathematics of Computation or Applied Mathematics. I will be missing 2 prereq’s in each, HOWEVER ! These are none impacted majors and not very competitive so that’s not a HUGE issue. I changed my major since CS is very competitive and I’d rather get into UCLA rather than take a HUGE, HUuuUUuge risk. I don’t want to be at CC for another year.

My GPA turned out to be a 3.55 cumulative (not for this semester ofc since I have all A’s …sigh) due to last year and my head not really being in the right place (I would hope they would understand as I am going to explain the deaths of my family. It was a hard year. I’m surprised I even got a ‘C’). Also I hope they can see my grades improve drastically for this year and understand.

For those who are applying to the college of letter’s and sciences and are stressed about prereq’s : <a href=“Got Admitted w/o Complete Pre-Reqs - UC Transfers - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/918605/got-admitted-w-o-complete-pre-reqs</a></p>
