I've been waitlisted to Vanderbilt and johns Hopkins and with cornell coming out tomorrow, I have like no hope left. This means I have zero acceptances, a bunch of waitlists, and a lot of rejections coming my way tomorrow to add to the pile that already includes duke. It's so disappointing after working my butt off my whole life and I know that I could handle anything, but colleges certainly don't think so. Except for my safety uf, the lowest school ranking wise I applied to was vandy. I don't even know how to go about this waitlist thing. How can I convince these colleges I'm worth it without annoying them to death with updates every week?

Brand new, with those great stats you will most definitely get off one of the waitlists. Make an appointment right away with your guidance counselor or trusted faculty member to be your very strong advocate. Writing letters to the schools is good, get some solid advice of how often and remember to FINISH STRONG. Don’t let up with your grades or activities. Use the honors you have received at graduation as leverage and have your GC or other school official transmit your grades and more recs after the school year is over.

If you are really dissatisfied with your choices after the summer, take a gap year and do something really meaningful and do it well. You’ll have a whole new range of options next year. This strategy has worked countless times and it will work for you. Don’t give up, and remember that walls are put up in front of us to see whether we will stop and turn around, or climb over them. You’ll get there to a top notch school, it just may take a little longer than expected. Be patient, spend your time wisely…good luck.

waiting on cornell(I won’t even check this, because its a rejectiong) and vanderbilt(my mail hasn’t come in today, but with my shiiitty luck a rejection)…don’t feel bad, plenty of people in your postion…

Don’t give up; remember it’s not your fault if you don’t get in somewhere, test scores are just a small part of the whole process.

I’m pretty much in your boat, except vandy, which I think I just got lucky on.

Never give up!

You know what, you need a montage. I GUARANTEE you the first person to film a montage and send it to Admissions gets off the wait list.

Thanks for your replies guys. Good luck to you too on your waitlists and upcoming decisions! I’ll send in letters and stuff for my waitlists, but I won’t get my hopes up. I wish I had applied to some more schools like wake forest an BC but then again my parents wouldn’t have wanted to pay so much for a school if it wasn’t like top 20. Ugh. But I guess I kinda understand, and there’s still UF (honors) so it doesn’t totally suck. And hopefully I’m praying that cornell might still surprise me (for the better).

What do you mean by montage, like a collage?
Cuz they said they don’t want CDs and tapes and stuff.

My S got waitlisted by Vandy last year. The first day after the deadline for deposits expired (5/2 maybe?- can’t remember) he got a call from a very excited admissions rep to tell him he was in. The rep was quite deflated to hear my S had decided to go elsewhere. But if you really want to go to Vandy, don’t give up hope. It might help if you let them know that if accepted, you’ll go.

You know, a montage…like Rocky.

Of course they say that, nobody wants to have to watch thousands of montages, that’s just there to give the quitters the necessary push to give up. Honestly, what are the chances of getting in off the wait list? Not all that great. Suppose you film a montage for the generations and send it to them, maybe they’ll look at it in disgust at your blatant disregard for rules in which case you’re no worse off than before, or maybe they’ll have some sense and sign you up for the heaven that is Vanderbilt.

Don’t give up! I’m not going to and neither should you!

Brand new. Your problem is that you ought to very pleased that you have a chance be a UF Gator. Vandy is fine but as between the two UF in my view is superior especially if you are a Florida resident for a mriad of tangible reasons.

Hilsa. I appreciate your commitment to the Dores and your continuing passion to battle your way off the waitlist. Best of luck however did apply to UF?

i’m in the same boat as you…and i’m pretty much banking between uf (honors hopefully) and bc. good luck to you

Official update: WAITLISTED at Cornell too!!!
But I’m not giving up on this thing. Its actually kinda cool to be considered for an ivy, but still this one made me cry the most. It sucks to be so freakin close 3 TIMES but not get it. But its ok, i will keep trying and hopefully i will end up at one of these schools. If not, UF is still a good option i guess.

Brand new: Make the committment to Gator Nation now. Vandy is overhyped and Ithaca is frigid. Show some love to Gainesville. The coeds are waiting!

You’re clogging our forum with your ambulance chasing, bud.

That’s weird cause I got into biomedical engineering at Northwestern but not Vanderbilt. I felt so crushed when I found out I got waitlisted today. I have worked so hard in school for years and made unreal sacrifices to put myself in position to get into Vanderbilt. Seeing early decision kids from my high school who were grossly under-qualified compared to me (in terms of GPA, Test Scores, and ECs, and pure work ethic), I feel downright awful. I can’t help but think about the last four years and how many parties I didn’t go, how much I was picked on for being “a nerd”/studious, etc. I always had it in my mind that my hard work would pay off, that the immaturity of high school would end and I would be rewarded after paying my dues. This is a nightmare. That being said, congrats to everyone who got in!

There won’t be a “next time”, but the lesson here is clear – if you were dying to go there, you should have gone ED I…

Except Financial Aid is a problem for some people. =]
