Should I just go Undeclared?

I want to do Statistics/Mathematics at UC, I mention it very briefly in my Why essay. However, should I just go Undeclared (since those majors are popular), or does it not matter at all?

Major choice plays little role, if any (I doubt it plays a role). Pick what you like. Plus, you may get asked about it during an interview. Sorry, I do not know if UC does interviews. If they do it would matter so you could talk about it.

Doesn’t matter too much, but keep in mind you don’t apply to particular majors.

Like OxalisWombo said, you don’t apply to majors, just the College. The major choices you put on your application aren’t binding in any way; first years just enter as “common year”, not a specific major. With this in mind, I’d encourage you to list what you’re interested in. They want to know that you’re passionate. How will they know you’re passionate about math/stat if you don’t list it?

If one mentions Economics in their essay, would it hurt? Will admissions view your application under a more critical light?

It shouldn’t hurt if you mention it as something you’re fascinated by academically, NOT if you want a buttload of money, though that may well be the reason.

I had a fascinating discussion with my interviewer (he was an alum, not an admissions rep) about why I wanted to study math. Besides that, I don’t think my major ever came into consideration during the admissions process.

Your choice of major can help draw into clearer focus your choice of extracurriculars and classes, but it has a negligible effect on admissions. Choose the major you’d be most interested in studying; don’t try to game the system. Besides, it helps make your Why Chicago essay more specific.
