I am a student at a top ten university in the US, and I've received some pretty poor grades that I think may take me out of the running for medical school. I've gotten a C in orgo 2, a C in math, a C+ in gen chem 2 and a C+ in the second math class for premeds. All of my other grades are in the high A-B range, and I have a 3.26 grade point overall. I'm wondering whether I should consider options other than medicine in the future. I have really good EC's and involvement, am conducting research and am beginning to shadow and volunteer regularly. I just wanted to get some people's opinions, it would really help me out.

I think your sGPA is going to prevent you from being accepted into any US allopathic medical school. Your sGPA needs to be in the 3.5 range–and it’s not. One C in your pre reqs might be acceptable; having Cs in most of your pre reqs isn’t. ECs aren’t going to help you because admissions looks at grades first. Also the low science grades do not bode well for scoring competitively on the MCAT.

At this point, I think it’s time to look at alternative careers.

I agree with the above.

I hope others who think that going to a top school is going to give them an edge for med school read this thread. I can’t say for sure, but it’s very likely that this student may have had a higher sGPA at a lower-ranked school…unless his grades are purely from not studying, not learning the material.

That said, I wonder about these C’s…some of these top 10 schools hesitate to give D/Fs…so they’re quite generous with C’s…and have heavy grade inflation. So, do your C’s really mean that you were barely passing these classes and were given sympathy C’s?

Well I am no expert but I am always one for the underdog and think that drive is the deciding factor. With that being said I think that the prudent thing would be to put your premed on hold and finish strong in other classes. Take a couple years off reevaluate yourself and see if this is something you really want to do, if so consider a postbac. But for now WOWmom and mom2kids are on point.
