I plan to do pre med in college but i want to look as unique as possible on my college application for my first choice school. anyway so if i wrote i want to major in something obscure like zoology or latin or w/e would i be penalized in any way?

well a lot of times colleges dont even admit by major so it wont even help you. they just want to make sure that the thousands of kids they choose to admit dont all want to major in french or something. so theres really no point.

for schools that admit by major, youre better off applying directly to a major. if its a major that would give you motivation to avoid on you app (probably an impacted major), itd be really hard to change your major to that anyways. and most of the times it still wont help you that much.

and dont lie. otherwise im sure that its gonna be indicative of the person you plan to be later on in life.

well, im applying to stanford. its a very good school, obv. my GPA and SAT scores are good but im sure there are gonna be people with crazy good apps. i want to set myself apart.

ok im sorry i offended people with lying. then again i got the idea off something someone said at this forum =p

Your “intended” major is just for survey reasons, and they don’t expect an adolescent to have their entire future planned out.

Also, experienced adcoms in schools like Stanford get tens of thousands of candidates a year… they’ve seen every trick in the book. If you pick a major that you have never shown any interest in before, they will get suspicious… and you don’t want to plant that seed of doubt in the first place. It would actually hurt you.

Lying about your major won’t really help you get into Stanford but some colleges do have schools that are harder to get into than others (ie. NYU Stern). In Stanford’s case, everybody is so competitive and intelligent that it’s not worth it to apply for a different major because even the people who genuinely apply for uncommon majors there will have as good as a chance as you of getting in. Plus, its a hassle to have to change your major if you do get accepted. Like what other people said, it’s best to stay honest when dealing with college apps.

Yeah, people do much worse things to get into college. I talked with an admissions intern at Harvard and she said that parents call telling the school about stuff other kids from the school have done that are bad. Now that is too far imo.

Realize that colleges that care about majors will expect that in interviews and in your application, there will be information to back up your interest in the major you’ve selected. Consequently, lying about your major can hurt you.

I believe you must have the slightest clue at least? Depending on what subjects you have taken and your SATs. In my opinion, if the university asks for your major and you say still impending, that really sounds uncertain for your chances.

Northstarmom:
