I graduated high school in 1998 and went straight to a community college and got horrible grades. I then joined the military and went to a different college and received much better grades. I am now trying to get in to a university and am conditionally accepted but I don't want to turn in the transcript from the school that I went to 10 years ago. Do schools have some sort of tracking system where they would know about all the colleges I went to?

obviously be truthful, if you have matured and learned to work hard then dont be afraid of your past. Wouldn't your age raise some questions if you have been out of school that long?

Yes, they do. For one - if you have received any kind of federal aid (pell grants, stafford loans) the information will come up on the financial aid side and they are obligated to report it to admissions and you would definitely have your admission rescinded for the lie.

Also keep in mind if you are going to do anything where your background may need to be checked, the information is going to come out and your degree could be rescinded leaving you with a worthless piece of paper. If you were planning to go to law school where everything about you is checked when you go for the Bar, the information will come out and you will have agin spent a lot of money for worthless paper.

It is great that you got your life on track. Keep in mind that people mess up all the time but people also get themselves together. It seems you have done that. Don't spend your time looking over your shoulders risking all you are trying to achieve because the truth does always come out. You would be better served explaining what happened to the admissions office (who can be very forgiving toward returning students, because you are now a different person) and you will most likely still be admitted.

good luck

Don't lie, you will apprehensive during all four years. It is not worth taking a risk. Besides, the colleges are unlikely to hold against you bad grades from 10 years ago. They will be most impressed with your recent performance. Good luck.

There is a website for the National Student Clearing House. Any college can cross check any student by SS# with any other shcool you went to.
No where to run. Sorry- this is fallout from 9/11 and the flight school enrollments.

don't lie. there's always a possibility of getting caught.

Some schools have a policy of academic amnesty, where they don't count really old grades toward your GPA if you are willing to repeat the courses (which you probably would do anyway, sounds like).

If you're worried they will rescind your provisional admission offer, I don't think it will happen, unless there's some etched in stone policy that they can't deviate from. That you overcame some problems in your life, went on to serve your country with honor, and then did well in a subsequent enrollment will tell them a lot about who you are.

Resilience is a valued trait, and they can't really assess it in applicants who have always done well. You have shown you can recover from setbacks, even failures, and learn from your mistakes. Even if this U. turns you down for some strange reason, there will be others who will value your journey. Best of luck.
