I was nominated by my high school as the Jefferson Scholar for UVA and am in the middle of that process. I assumed it would be viewed as an honor by all the schools I'm applying to and told them about it. But I was unexpectedly deferred by a very elite university for Early Action, while kids from my school with lesser credentials got in. So..my question is this-
Do elite schools (aside from UVA) view this as a negative because there is a chance I could have a full ride to UVA and would probably go there given that result? Would they waitlist or defer me waiting to hear whether I get the scholarship? Was I an idiot?

I don't think you should list it. It's not as if you have won the Jefferson Scholarship. Being nominated for it simply means you're the best student from your school who has applied to U Va.

Oh please, very elite universities don't give a crap about being nominated to be a Jefferson scholar. That's why they're the VERY ELITE.

And no, there's no conspiracy or exogenous reason why some kid with perceived lesser credentials got in and you didn't. They might've just written a heck of a lot better essay than you did.
