Should I live on campus or off-campus

I'm a transfer student and ill be sophomore next year. Now I live on campus. when i move to U-M I dont know which is better for me---live on campus or off-campus.
Live on campus:
pro: make a lot of new friends; have fun with roommate;
con: no private room; sometime, i just want to stay with myself; now Im kind of bored of living with others

Live off campus:
Pro:have private room; have a good place to have party;
Con: I'm afraid that ill stay in my own world 4ever, Im not sure if I can make a lot of friends.

So, which is Better for Me?? Help~

If you live off campus, you’re not going to be in your own world. You’re just going to have to try harder to make friends than if you lived on campus. But it’s not impossible.

Minus any financial aid, dorms boil down to ~$1300-1400/month depending on the room type, and includes food, utilities, etc.

The range for off-campus is much larger. Visiting AA and asking a few good questions can go a long way.

Edit: it may also be of interest that the vast majority of freshmen live on campus, while most upperclassmen live off campus. You should start some Googling and draw your own conclusions.

If you haven’t already signed a lease for a house or apartment (as it seems you haven’t) then you’re really late in the game for off-campus housing. Look around a little and see what is left and if you can find something because personally I don’t like the dorm setting and am very much looking forward to living off-campus next year, but everything will probably be pretty far from campus or very expensive so the dorms may be your best option.

My son is in the same position as you. I am an alumni and lived both on and off campus. I guess off-campus depends upon how far off. A mile off or in Ypsi? In an old house in the historic west side or one of the new apartment complexes a few miles away? I’d suggest on or near campus (walking distance). It will be a drag driving or taking a bus to class.

There are a number of new apartments that rent by the room - shared bath, shared kitchen. My son will be at Landmark (liveatlandmark.com) and Zaragon West is new as well. They are pricey but with great locations and are not dorms. These new apartments have left some of the more traditional housing stock open, I saw a few decent looking 1 bedroom and studio apartments available in older homes.

Landmark seemed like a good alternative for transfers who have missed the chance to room with friends. I was also told dorm selections for transfer students won’t be that great. We figured it would be better for my son to be on campus for at least the first year.

I lived in the dorms the first year, the old west side in year 2 and a few miles away east of campus in year 3 and 4. Most of my memorable moments were on campus so it might be worth seeing what you can find. Unless you are in Art or Engineering I would avoid North Campus dorms.

Thanks a lot guys! I’ll figure it out.
