So I'm going to Centre College in the Fall. It's a good LAC, but not the best. US news ranks it #42 out of all national LACs. So I know I probably won't be landing any gigs that Ivy students would get. (IB)

This is how Centre explains Financial Economics as a major:

"Centres financial economics program offers a broad background in the liberal arts tradition. It provides the overall fundamentals of economic theory combined with specialized knowledge in finance."

It's also suggested that I minor/double major in math along with this major. Is this a good idea? I don't see myself getting a masters/phd in economics (which is the main reasoning for the extra math usally?). My main goal for a while has been an MBA, maybe Law if it sparks an interest when I get into college.

I plan on getting the best internships I can, networking with alumni, yada yada. My question is - What kind of jobs would I get with this degree?

I want the best job possible so I can go to a top 20 b-school. So could anyone tell me types of jobs I could get if I played my cards right? And should I count investment banking and consulting out right off the bat since I'm not at a target school?

Any finance-ey type major can get you into banking. Financial economics sounds pretty nice. I’d definitely do it.

When you get to college, I recommend you join clubs and utilize the CRC a lot. Trust me, in four years, you’ll learn a lot. Just relax and worry about taking it easy, getting good grades, and enjoying yourself. You don’t even have to worry about anything until about your second year career-wise.

Getting banking jobs matters less about specific coursework, so long as you know fundamentals of accounting and finance. After that, it’s networking, giving a good brand/impression, and having good grades.

Good luck, I wish my school offered that major. I am just doing finance or economics separately (although I do not intend to get into banking)

Your plan so far sounds good. You may have trouble getting into top banking firms right out of college, but you can definitely still get some banking or consulting jobs. Just apply yourself and try to not feel “held back” by your school. Just do your best, be confident, and look around websites and such for opportunities. Also, PLEASE evaluate your interests and see what you actually want to do for a job. Yes, the money and prestige air of banking is cool, but trust me on this, you will not be happy doing banking if you’re only doing it to impress others.

Also, getting into a top 20 MBA is easily doable even from any school. Your university does not matter a whole lot, work experience and perceived potential are measured. Although workplace and work experience are heavily weighted, where you worked exactly does not matter a huge amount or as much as you might think. It’s more your ability for potential and leadership roles taken. People from top firms just tend to get in because they’re driven and already talented at presenting themselves. Focus on a high GPA and later a high GMAT. Good numbers will get you in somewhere.
