I am interested in transferring to the College of Charleston for Fall of 2014. I want to major in Women and Gender Studies, and am interested in minoring in African Studies, with the hope of studying abroad and even possibly living in Africa after graduation. I hope to one day work for a non profit that empowers women and girls, and I already consider myself a domestic violence advocate. I also know that I want to study a foreign language. My dilemma is choosing between French and Spanish. I already know some Spanish, but I am wondering if I should major in French, since French is an official language of many African countries. What do you guys think? Should I major in French(I know only a few words), or should I minor in Spanish?

Are you more interested in one or the other? If so, go with that one.

Of those two I only speak Spanish, but from what I understand French isn’t overly difficult to teach yourself if you want/need to, provided you regularly put time into it. I know that Spanish wouldn’t be overly difficult to self-study, again provided you regularly put time into it. Keep that in mind as far as learning the one you don’t pick is concerned (if you choose to).

All that said, assuming Spanish doesn’t interest you more than French, I’d go for French for the same reason you said.

I’m pretty much interested in both languages. That’s what makes this decision so difficult. I love Spanish and French, but I think that if I didn’t work in Africa, knowing French would not be as useful as knowing Spanish(living in America). However, knowing French would make me a good candidate for other jobs as well(since a lot of people know Spanish).

Can you roll them both into a Romance Language major/minor? I think if you could, you could get some credit for the Spanish you already know, and learn French. My friend also says, French is also useful for a job in the UN or in diplomatic relations. I think it would be less work in Spanish and French if you could roll them together like that. ¡Buen suerte!
