should I major in marketing

I’m really interested in marketing but I hear it is a worthless major. Would it be smart to major in accounting or finance and minor in marketing? Or double major?

I do know a lot of people who majored in marketing and many of them had job offers upon graduation. I think it definitely depends on the quality of your undergraduate program, in terms of recruiting resources available as well as the kinds of skills it teaches. Marketing is more than just selling – it involves quantitative skills such as statistics and business analytics as well as research and industry knowledge.

One common source of recruiting that I’ve seen become more popular in recent years has been marketing majors who have minors or double majors in management information systems or computer information systems (IT specialties). IT consulting services can use people with those skill sets on engagements since they’re coming in with both hard skills and people skills that they want on their projects.

But of course that all depends on your program. Some departments are aggressive about helping their students find jobs by forming strong relationships with companies that do a lot of hiring out of college and spending a lot of time getting their students ready for the job market while others just kind of leave it up to you. The latter can still be good schools but of course the less support you have the more work that you would personally have to put in to find a job.

Would you reccommend minoring in mis or marketing

I can’t really recommend anything. Marketing on its own is a good major in my opinion. Are you interested in MIS or any other business degree? Is your marketing program have concentrations that could be just as good/useful as a minor in something else? It’s hard to know without having any information about what you personally want and what you have available.

A bit of information that I think is true for probably most majors for most schools is getting that internship. Personally, at my school there’s an unwritten law for marketing majors; if you get an internship, then you’re set but if you don’t get an internship, then you’re screwed. So if you really have a passion for marketing, and make a good GPA and do an internship, then I think you’ll be fine.
