Should I major in Mechanical Engineering?

@rkepp12 You’d probably get a ton of financial aid at MIT and Caltech if you aren’t rich.

@rkepp12 - Purdue has merit scholarships for which OOS students are eligible- they are extremely competitive. Check out the Trustee and Presidential scholarships here: <a href=“Scholarships - Undergraduate Admissions - Purdue University”>http://www.admissions.purdue.edu/costsandfinaid/scholarships.php</a>. Non-resident tuition is under $29,000.

NC State’s non-resident tuition is under $24,000. Information about scholarships is here; <a href=“Financial Aid | Student Services Center | NC State University”>Financial Aid | Student Services Center | NC State University;

Good luck!

Caltech financial aid is good but you’ll get partial funding because they want to cover all of their students. DS has ½ of his costs paid and we have to pay for the rest.

@cosmological I know that at least MIT has very good financial aid. I ran their net price calculator and I would need to pay about $4000 per year. Although I’m not sure how accurate the calculator is, but that seems like really good financial aid.

@albclemom I’ll have to think about that a little bit. If they don’t give out much financial aid (Purdue or NC State), there’s a possibility I could be better off at a private university that is slightly more expensive but offers more financial aid options. I’ll continue researching though.

@aunt bea I did the calculator for CalTech as well, and it wasn’t NEARLY as generous as MIT was. It calculated a net price of about $25,000 a year. But still, it’s a dream school of mine, so I’m going to see what happens. There’s a large chance I won’t even get accepted to either.

Based on all of this though, that’s exactly why I’m looking for maybe one more school as a “safety.” One that I have a chance of getting admitted to but also is more affordable. I’ve been looking more into Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and possibly Georgia Tech (to replace Purdue/UMich) since it’s slightly better in terms of tuition compared to Purdue. But we’ll see. Thanks for all of your advice everyone! I appreciate it.
