Hi, I’m an incoming senior about to start applying to colleges in the fall. I’ve been taking art classes for around 10 years and I’ve got a lot of pieces that I like, and they range in art form and style over the years. Would it be worth it to make an art portfolio even if I’m not planning on going to an art school? My parents think it would be a good way to help me “stand out” in the college admissions process, but I already have the art classes and projects documented in my resume. I don’t really see the point if I’m going to major in the sciences, so should I make an art portfolio to submit to colleges?
My daughter did this; she had a bunch of (well I’m her mom and biased but) fantastic 3-D pieces that she photographed and added as an art portfolio, despite her essays and intention to be a biology major. All I know is, someone must have liked the whole package, because she got into her ED school. So, go for it!
^ Absolutely, IF the OP’s work is “portfolio level” - i.e., strong enough that they would be competitive if he/she were applying to art schools. Visual skills are valuable in many areas, including science, and having a strong portfolio in an unrelated area will add breadth and give substance to something that the OP has done to a long time. If the work is not that strong, however, then I would not submit a portfolio
