You think they will look down on that? I'm extremely confident in my ability to make an interesting and unique question, but if they will look down on it, then I'll just do one of there questions.

And since I'm on here already, would you say Chicago is just as competitive as JHU?

“In the spirit of adventurous inquiry, pose a question of your own. If your prompt is original and thoughtful, then you should have little trouble writing a great essay. Draw on your best qualities as a writer, thinker, visionary, social critic, sage, citizen of the world, or future citizen of the University of Chicago; take a little risk, and have fun.”

Competitive in terms of admissions? Probably the same, if not, harder.

If they did not want your to write your own prompt or was going to look down on applicants who did, do you really think they would include it as an option? This isn’t a game in which they hope people will fail because students do what is asked of them.

If you still don’t have an answer to your question – No, I don’t think they will look down on it.

A fair number of the prompts they use are prompts that previous applicants wrote for their #5s. So, obviously, #5 can be a win. But it’s not easy to come up with a prompt that’s more interesting than the ones they pick.
