I don’t think top tier schools are necessary looking for students who already know what they want to major in. They want their students to go to college to explore and extend themselves. It is why they don’t ask students to choose a major until junior year. Many students do change their majors when they are in college.
I also do disagree with @Publisher, I would stay away from any illnesses, especially mental illness. Not everyone is that enlightened and no need to give them a reason to say no.
The thing about these kinds of conditions is that they are never "previous" or defeated. I think kids are sold a story about redemption and triumph that might be OK for a parent to reiterate but are not realistic and certainly not a sales pitch for applying to college.
Never write about mental illness for any part of your admissions application. Ever. If you need help brainstorming a strong topic, PM me. I help lots of students with their apps.
