I go to the library every week. Should I list that on app? The app says list all recreational activities.
Thanks

I wouldn't, by that logic I guess since I drive my car every week I should put it on there.

What app, what college?

You could write it, but I'm not sure how much weight it will be given- that depends on your essays, other ECs and recs.

i like to read, and i get my books from the library so the visits are recreational for me and the app ask for that. common app btw.

I am more dedicated...I brush my teeth every day, not every week; should I put that on my app?

i wouldn't suggest it...i went twice a week for the last 2 yrs for the same reason and didn't put it...i think they mean the most important recreational activites...i sleep a ton for fun, but i don't think that's something they'd want to know

what if i've went for the past 8 years?

Wait...i Forgot To Add That I Shower Every Day For Fun Too!

i get the point anonymous99 so quit adding salt to the wound

elizabeth, I didn't mean to try to make fun of you or anything, but such an EC is the equivalence of me reading the newspaper every day; I mean, it's so trivial and sort of useless that well, saying so on an app sort of makes it look like you don't actually have any othe ECs...there's tons of stuff some people do every day, but it's not necessarily something that you want to tell an adcom; I seriously think that saying that you go to the library once a week will hurt you more than it helps you; I mean, they'll probably think, okay, so this person reads every day...big deal

sorry! I was just joking around...I don't mean to make enemies on CC!

never mind anonymous99, i guess i'll just have to settle for the community college since that was my only EC worthwhile

gotta agree with this one...reading the newspaper is something colleges expect you to do anyway...kinda like reading outside of what's required for class...

you may want to do something in an essay/an extra essay on your love for reading, but i don't think that just mentioning you've gone to the library every week for the last 8 years will mean much to them especially because reading outside of class is something they expect you to do anyway

i agree with LAgal.
but if going to library means something a lot to you, maybe write it in ur essay and talk about it there.

I agree- going to the library may be a great way to learn and increase knowledge, but it's not something to put on a college application. Instead, your love of reading should be implied through high verbal/writing scores on the SAT, high grades in your english courses, and perhaps a well written essay on how your weekly ritual of going to the library has influenced the person you are today :) Best of luck!

I'm going to disagree with basically everyone. As someone with good stats and extremely lacking ECs, I've talked to my college counselor about applications that ask for for "recreational activities" and/or "interests," and she seemed rather supportive of putting things about which you care. Honestly, they may look at it and go "so what," but how do you think they'll respond if they see a completely empty section? If you have something else that you could put in lieu of it, obviously put that. However, If you don't, I honestly don't think it can hurt if you include it.

Edit: I should probably also say that I agree with Northstarmom. Phrasing it as "reading" (in that recreational activities section) may be a bit better, and bringing up the whole library thing while writing about your passion for reading in an essay might work out.

Presumably, the interest is reading, not going to the library. Heck, "going to the library" could mean going there to use the computers because you don't have one at home or going to enjoy the lattes that some libraries sell in their coffee shops. Heck, in many cities, libraries are popular with homeless people who use them as a place to stay warm and to sleep during the winter.

My suggestion is to mention your love of reading, and then provide information about the types or quantities of books that you've read for fun. As someone else suggested, this also could be a good subject for an essay.

what about raising turtles?
should i mention this in my activities chart?
it says i can put hobbies...

that might be sort of interesting, but I think an essay about it would be better
