Should I minor in Business as a P.T. major?

I’m currently a 3+3 Health Science/Doctor of Physical Therapy Major at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. I just finished up my first year of classes with the following GPA’s:
Fall 2016: 3.63
Spring 2017: 3.67

As part of the program that I’m in, I have the opportunity to minor in Small Business Management, Psychology, Sociology, Exercise Science, etc. I have a strong interest to run my own out-patient practice. However, I’m required to complete my minor within the next two years before I enter my final three years.

This is what I need to take for my minor:

-Intro to Business Seminar 2 credits (already taken this semester, received an A)
-Accounting Theory 3 credits
-Small Business Management 3 credits
-Introduction to Macroeconomics 3 credits
These are elective courses, but I need three of them
-Financial Management 3 credits
-Introduction to Marketing Management 3 credits
-Principles of Management 3 credits
-Introduction to Entrepreneurship—New Venture Creation 3 credits
-Professional Writing 3 credits

And this is what I need to take for my major:

1st Year:
General Chemistry I & II with Labs (B- for Chem I, B+ for Chem II) - 4 credits
Writing and Rhetoric I & II (A for Writing I, A- for Writing II)
Introduction to Sociology 3 credits (A)
Health Science Seminar and Orientation 1 credit each (received A+ for both courses)
Pre-Calculus and Trig (filled with AP Calc BC credit, took Philosophy instead and received an A)
Intro to Communication 3 credits (A-)

2nd Year:
-General Biology I & II w/ Lab 4 credits each
-Introductory Physics I & II w/ Lab 4 credits each
-Multidisciplinary Inquiry (6 credits, 3 credits for each semester)
-Electives (originally Intro to Psych and a 3 credit General Ed. elective, but AP’s took care of that)

3rd Year:
-Anatomy & Physiology I & II 3 credits each
-Human Structure and Function Lab I & II 1 credit each
-Biostatistics I 3 credits
-Scientific Writing 3 credits
-Psychology of Human Development (already taken) 3 credits
-Cognitive Psychology 3 credits
-Basic Nutrition 3 credits
-Medical Terminology for PT I & II, 1 credit each

Should I go for the minor, or should I just enjoy myself before my professional years roll around and go for an MBA later on?

I’d talk to your advisor at the college to see what might be workable given your required courses.

@JMS357

  1. First ensure your main goal is on track and you can meet the all requirements to get in to PT in 3 years (are you on track especially GPA).
  2. If you are smooth sailing on point 2, doing the 6 courses for minor have any overlap to your general education requirements to get your UG degree or can you double dip for any requirements you need to fulfill? Find out what is the net new courses you need to do.
  3. It is good to expose to the courses offered in business minor (knowing you have interest in your own business) than doing MBA for 2 years. You can check if you can do any of the courses during summer is a possibility.

My DPT daughter has an appointment with her advisor on Thursday to discuss changing her undergrad major to business…we think it is a good plan.

@GoldenRock I think that the courses for the minor have overlap with the general ed requirements for my degree. Thanks for the advice everyone!
