I am a rising junior at the moment. I want to go to University of Florida. The OS tuition is 30k while the IS tuition is 5k. I was thinking of moving there after my junior year so i would graduate there my senior year, allowing me to pay IS tuition as I would be a resident (I believe it is 1 schoolyear to qualify for in state). My parents want to eventually move to Florida anyways, so I thought why not do this as it would be a win-win. I am 2nd in my class with a 4.58 GPA and was thinking I would probably be Val at the new highschool, too.

Any thoughts?

Since you’re likely a dependent student, this may not work. A dependent student is considered to be a legal resident of the same state as the parents:

There are some exceptions, but you should research this (and get an answer from UF) before moving to Florida.

If you do move to Florida (say your parents buy a home, etc…and fine a way to qualify), then don’t worry about being Val, instead UF is likey going to look at your school ranking at your old high school (as well as GPA, etc…). It’s your status at the end of your Junior year that matters. You will want to take a rigorous clas load (your senior year).

Good Luck!

thanks a bunch

if my mother was to move there and my dad and I stay here would that qualify me for instate?

Yes, it’s much more likely. If your mother meets the requirement (see that link above), then you would also (as long as she’s claiming you as a dependent on her federal income tax returns, for example). You wouldn’t need to go to a school in Florida.
