I told all the schools that I applied to that I was a Semifinalist on the applications. Now I've been notified that I'm a Finalist. Should I tell the schools this, or not?

D did. She sent a brief note that "the following should be added to her application/file". She also added other honors she had received since applying or being accepted by a school (state orchestra, etc.)

If the fact that you became a National Merit Finalist is the only update that you would have, then I would say no. I'm not planning to. They probably assume that you will make it, and (personally) I think it would be a little weird to send an update that only had one piece of pretty obvious info in it. MidwestParent's D makes more since to me, since she had other stuff to talk about.

My D was just named a finalist and the valedictorian. Should she let colleges know?

Since she has both, it doesn't sound like such a bad idea. On the other hand, if other kids are applying from her school to the same colleges/universities, the colleges/universities will see that she has the highest GPA...

bumpppppppppp

I had a few other things to say so I did, if you have other stuff to update with I'd say go for it; otherwise it's your call.

I don't think I will. I'll ask my counselor tomorrow.

Nah colleges won't care. When did they send out the letters for finalist anyways?

Received my letter on Feb 11.
