Should I only ask for recommendations from profs who gave me an A?

How about an A-, which is also the median grade.

I’m also getting a rec. from a professor who gave me an A-.

He’s also the toughest grader on campus and I got an A in another class of his.

I wouldn’t ask for a rec. from a teacher who gave you the class average unless you felt that other experiences/contact with him/her would enable them to give you a better rec.

Tell us more about why you might choose this prof/other alternatives. I think an A- class is perfectly fine to ask the prof for a rec. But I also don’t know any of the other considerations.

I got an A- for a small class, and I’ve developed quite a relationship with the prof. I got an A for another class (median is B), but it was a huge, introductory lecture. And an A for a language class (median is A-), but I’m not sure if the prof writes good English.

Can I ask for recommendations by profs who have not graded me? I.e. next term’s profs.

You can ask for a recommendation from a prof who has not taught you in his/her class, but my experience showed me that it is much easier for a prof to write a recommendation about you if he/she taught you and can attest to your excellent work ethic, interest in learning, etc.

Unless you have a great personal connection, I think it is easier for a prof to write about a student who he/she has graded and can verify the student’s academic and career goals.

As for the grade you received in the class, use your judgment when deciding if the class was hard or easy.

I received a B+ in a very difficult course, which was near the top of the class, and asked that prof to write my recommendation. I knew she was a great writer and could back up my work ethic/interest, so even though I did not get an A or even an A-, the prof was an excellent choice for my recommendation. (Helped me transfer into a top 35 national school!!)

Good Luck!

The averages at Dartmouth are mega-inflated, huh? If you got the median score, but it WASN’T scaled, I’d ask. If it was, I don’t think it a good idea unless you have a very personal relationship.

This sounds like an excellent prof for a recommendation, to me.

Yes, you can ask for a rec from someone from next term. In that case, I would think it best that it be a class where there is quite a bit of opportunity for participation, a prof that you can get to know on some level via ofc hours, inviting to lunch, etc. Ideally, one where there is some sort of graded work or evaluated work that you have submitted, even if no mid-term or final grade yet. You can provide that prof a “resume” with the grades you have gotten in other classes, so that s/he can see how you perform as a student in other work.

Yes, A- is fine.
