Should I or Should I Not? HELP

If you want to stay in the southeast the Music Engineering Technology program at the University of Miami Frost School of Music is your best bet closest to home.

^Agreed.

Also, another possibility to look into given your mom’s position on distance:

I don’t know much about the school as it’s small, private, though high in regional rank, but I have heard some music from a grad from Stetson’s (FL) Music Technology program (who was accepted for graduate work at Mills College in SF) and I felt his work was quite accomplished.

Here is the program website: [Music Technology](http://www.stetson.edu/other/academics/programs/music-technology.php)

MusicGeek, my son is your age and looking for exactly the same programs as you. He is also top in his class and VERY passionate about music (drums, guitar, piano). His dream is to be a music producer as well as perform or collaborate with other musicians. I have been encouraging him to consider integrating film/tv production into his education plans to broaden his skills and thus be more employable. I must admit that the idea of him pursuing a career in music scares me to death, but I believe in his talent and I know we both would be filled with regret if he didn’t try. There are a few schools that have been on our radar that I have not seen mentioned in this thread. I am most impressed with American University in D.C. My son and I took a tour last weekend and plan to go back for their open house. Their College of Arts and Sciences offers majors in Audio Production, Audio Technology, and even Arts Management. The School of Communications offers degrees in Film and Video Production, Broadcast journalism and has a beautiful newly renovated building to boot. They have graduate programs in both areas. They even have a Business Entertainment degree in the Kogod School of business. They don’t put restrictions on taking courses or minoring in programs outside of your department in fact, the highly encourage it! The thing I like the most about AU is that their location is perfect for landing fantastic internship opportunities, which AU takes a lot of pride in. I think this is a crucial consideration when entering this field. I was telling my son that he could do his undergrad in film/video or broadcasting and minor in Audio Production. Ideally he would get an internship in D.C. that would turn into a paid position after graduating, and then go on to get a Master’s in Audio Production while he works. The campus is a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown and is actually surrounded by beautiful neighborhoods. I was pleasantly surprised at how safe the campus seems. The metro and AU transit makes getting anywhere in D.C. a breeze. My son loves the idea of being able to see live shows often. Unfortunately, unless he’s offered a generous financial aid package and some scholarships, I doubt we’ll be able to afford it. And realistically, a career in this field will make paying off student loans very challenging. But he’s going to try and we’ll be hoping for the best. But in the meantime we’re looking for a good plan B option. We also plan to look at UNC Asheville, Appalachian State, and Elon. – all in North Carolina, and Syracuse U. in NY. I know how frustrating it is to find information on this field. Every school seems to call it something different which doesn’t help. Good luck, and keep us updated on your search!

American University has a great program I’ve heard. As of right now, I am very interested in the University of Georgia’s music program… I am planning to major in Information Technology Systems and Mass Media Productions or Music Composition then get the certificate for Music Business if all goes as planned… This isn’t the best program, I know, but it would probably be best financially and it is not far from home, and I love the city of Athens. I hope everything goes great with your son!
