My mom, ever the bargain hunter, insists that we should shop for my dorm (applicances, bedding, decor, etc.) now because you can get much better deals on things like that right after Christmas compared to summer, when everyone's getting ready for college. I am all for good deals, but I really feel like I should wait to discuss this with my roommate. What if she has certain preferences, or wants to coordinate our bedding? I just feel like its a bad idea, but my mom thinks I'm "overthinking" the whole thing and should just get the stuff and deal with my roommate's side of it later. What do you guys think?

As for bedding and personal, non-shared things, I think that you don't have to worry about what your roommate thinks about those. People don't really coordinate bedding or anything like that. For the things that you're going to share with your roommate (TV, refridgerator, etc), I'd wait so that you know you aren't buying anything that you wont use. Also, most places that sell dorm-type stuff will put things on sale around the beginning of August. I know that Penney's always has bedding (including extra long twin sheets and blankets) on sale around that time. You might save yourself time and money to wait.

i agree; you don't have to coordinate bedspreads with your roomie (although--funny story-- i picked out one pattern in target, put it in my cart, and ended up switching it with a different one. when i got to school, i saw that my roomie had the one i put back! would have been funny if we had the exact same sheets). i would wait for the back-to-school sales if i were you.

like the two others said before me, go ahead and buy the stuff that you won't be sharing (bedding, laptop..etc), if you can get a good bargain, and wait for the bigger shared stuff to be bought in the summer. there's no need to coordinate bedding, and it's possible that you might end up matching anyway, without even planning it.

I recommend to wait for the laptop. You want to get it as close to college as possible so that you have the newest technology that will last you the longest time...
Intel is coming out with some new processors in early 2006 that are more power friendly and more efficient which in layman's terms means BETTER :)
Also you might want to wait for the Apple/Intel deal because depending on how they perform the new macs might be a lot better than any of the newer pcs...
In conclusion: DO NOT get a laptop now!

There are always great sales for dorm supplies right before school starts so I wouldn't recommend buying things now; plus you might change your mind about what you want if you buy too early.

there were articles this august about how much money stores make when kids go to college, and how profitable it is for them. They know that they have a market during July and August, and will have sales to get you to come to their store instead of others.
