Should I own a suit?

Is a suit a reasonable purchase for someone heading to college? I know most situations call for casual wear but I enjoy dressing up and would like an excuse to buy a suit.

Yeah, they’re good for job interviews/fairs or formal dinners.

Yes. You’ll enjoy having it when your friends are scrambling to find a nice one for that upcoming job fair or interview. And you can always use the pants, tie, and shirt if you want to impress someone on a nice date!

Go to Goodwill. Get a suit for like $6.

A suit is a necessity. You won’t be able to interview without one and half of my classes so far have required me to come to class wearing a suit on one or more occasions (fyi, I am a business major).

Invest in yourself and get at least one nice suit. This suit will serve you for important occasions. Get it taylored to your size, get shoes to go with in, the whole 9 yards. Not only will you impress the people with you, but by wearing that good suit you will feel more confident. I cannot stress how important one good suit is.

Sounds like a good idea. Though I guess it depends on school customs. Where I’m going, I heard guys sometimes dress up for football games, lol. Though it’s probably not to the point of a suit…

I never thought a college student would actually pack a suit unless they were bringing their entire closet. I say if you were in a situation where you needed to dress up, go to a store in the area and buy something casual… in that case, maybe if you have dress shoes, bring them.

Please don’t wear a $6 suit to an interview.

By the way, did anyone else misread this thread title as “Should I own a slut?”

You definitely need a suit. And you can get pretty good deals when Men’s Wearhouse or JC Penny, etc. has a sale. If you want to get even cheaper, I’ve actually heard good things about Target’s wool suits (made by their Merona brand), even from people who are big into fashion. Just make sure that whatever suit you get, you take it to a competent tailor and get it fitted to you.

There’s nothing wrong with a suit from Goodwill if it’s in good condition and fits you. There are plenty of clothes there in like-new condition (along with really bedraggled stuff). It’s worth a look if you’re on a tight budget. You can also get some good buys at Sym’s if there’s one near you.

" Please don’t wear a $6 suit to an interview. "

Not everyone lives in your rich fantasy world where you can go spend hundreds on a suit. If a person interviewing me has a problem with a Goodwill suit, then they can **** off.

Yes, yes I did. In fact, I keep reading everyone’s posts as “slut” instead of a suit. I thought you and akhman24 were getting into it about a $6 slut at first, haha.

I’m a little tipsy though and my mind is very warped.

There’s nothing wrong with a $6 slut, Plattsburgh.

Unless your major is business, probably not. I don’t want a job that requires a suit everyday, so I certainly hope wearing one to an interview won’t be required.

There are still occasions in which someone might wear a suit other than job interviews. Fraternities can have formal dances where a suit is de rigeuer. Your girlfriend’s parents take you out to a nice dinner. Your buddy’s parent dies and you have to attend the funeral. You get invited to a wedding.

I wear my suit about once a month. I’m an engineering major, by the way.

lol I did too, and boy is it funny to read it as slut. Maybe I’m just really immature though. :)

Go to Macy’s. They had Hugo Boss suits for $599 at the online sale a few weeks back. I bought two while I could.

I swear by nice suits. matches my Bimmer ;)

but for school, I didn’t really wear a suit. only ONCE for a speech.
I need them for personal business though.

and please, do yourself a favor and don’t wear $6 suits.
