I am a Kelley Direct Admit for Fall 2015 and received a Dean’s scholarship. The reason I did not get invited to Hutton in first place was because of my GPA, but my senior year 1st semester was a 3.98 UW.
My friend is a current soph at Kelley and he says he dropped out of Hutton b/c the classes were extremely difficult. Therefore, is it worth it for me to petition for Hutton? Is the difference between being a regular Kelley student and Hutton student drastic?
I don’t know a whole lot about this, but I do know that being in Hutton looks good if you want to apply for Business Honors after your freshman year. Business Honors gives access to smaller class sizes and honors business classes. I don’t think there would be a major difference between a Hutton and non Hutton student though.
If there’s one thing I would have changed in my IU career, it would have been to apply for business honors when I was still over a 3.7. I’ve heard that the classes are slightly harder but everything is curved hard to make up for it. Just look at the grade distributions.
JHuff11, I would recommend petitioning for Hutton Honors. You have nothing to lose. You do not HAVE to take honors classes as a Hutton Honors student, you just won’t graduate with the honors notation if you don’t fulfill the Hutton Honors requirements.
Your friend who said the classes were extremely difficult - was he talking about Kelley business honors classes or classes offered through the Hutton Honors college? As a HH student, you can take both.
My daughter is a sophomore HH student but has not yet taken any classes through the Hutton Honors college. She has, however, completed 2 Kelley honors classes (The Computer in Business K204 and Technology X202) and is currently enrolled in honors Managerial Accounting A207. She has really benefitted from the smaller classes, attended by motivated students (better for group projects!) and the more in-depth content. I don’t know if being in HH helped her Business Honors application, but she is now in the Business Honors program.
To build on my last post, I recommend you browse the Hutton Honors website if you haven’t already: http://www.indiana.edu/~iubhonor/
You will find that there are many advantages, and very few requirements. The requirements to remain a Hutton Honors member are to simply maintain a 3.0 GPA and to complete 2 3-hour honors classes by your 6th semester. That should be pretty easy! The requirements to actually gain General Honors Notation upon graduation are tougher - higher GPA and several honors classes through the HH College. But not all HH students graduate with the Honors notation.
The advantages include access to both Hutton Honors College honors classes and Kelley honors classes (except for those only open to Business Honors students), invitations to special programs, ability to live in honors housing, and opportunities for extracurricular activities through Hutton Honors. My daughter is a Hutton Honors Ambassador, a nice but pretty low-commitment activity. As a HH Ambassador, you host a few prospective HH students for a day, taking them to classes, customizing a campus tour for them, and just spending time answering their questions.
@JHuff11 Our posts crossed You still didn’t say whether your friend’s difficult honors classes were through Kelley or Hutton Honors. There’s a difference. You can take both as a Hutton Honors student. I can’t comment on the difficulty of HH classes, I can only tell you that there are plenty of students who do very well in the Kelley honors classes. As nico52 suggested, take a look at the IU grade distributions at this site: http://gradedistribution.registrar.indiana.edu
Compare the grades for The Computer in Business, a class all Kelley freshman students take. BUS-K 201 is the regular version and BUS-K 204 is the honors version.
And only you know your academic ability and drive compared to your friend
As far as networking with companies, my experience through my daughter is that she did not gain any business-related networking opportunities directly through HH. I would say her networking opportunities came mainly from the Kelley LLC (which I highly recommend) and joining business-related clubs. Being in Hutton Honors can be a benefit on your resume for certain selective clubs, so you can indirectly gain better networking opportunities by being in Hutton Honors.
@stbemtpynest My friend was talking about the Hutton Honors classes. From the grade distribution, it seems like most kids in the Honors classes receive As. But this could mainly b/c they are relatively more driven students.
So, basically the main benefits of being a HH member is the chance of getting the Honors notation and smaller classes?
Also, the KLLC, which is located in McNutt, is it worth it? I’m have an definitive academic priority, but I do not want to be surrounded by people who just study all day and night. Do you know the pros and cons of the KLLC?
You absolutely will not be surrounded by people who study 24/7 in the KLLC. Most of the people who leave the LLC do so because it’s too loud, not because it’s too quiet.
@JHuff11, see the “IU Housing” thread for my comments about the KLLC. I highly recommend it, but since it’s where my daughter lived her freshman year, I have nothing to compare it to.
The advantages of HH are: ability to take honors classes both in Hutton Honors college (my daughter hasn’t done this) and Kelley honors classes (I highly recommend), option to live in honors housing if you wish, special programs just for HH students, another advisor, additional opportunities for extra-curricular and leadership involvement, special scholarships and grants including study abroad scholarships, opportunity to graduate with General Honors notation, and something to enhance your resume for selective clubs, Kelley Business Honors program, etc. To be honest, I don’t know how much benefit you get from having the General Honors notation on your diploma, and my daughter probably won’t pursue that as she won’t have the time or desire to complete the required HH courses. So just to repeat, I feel there are many advantages and very few disadvantages of being a HH student.
I don’t quite understand what you mean by your friend “dropped out of Hutton”. The way I understand it, you are considered to be “in Hutton” as long as you maintain a 3.0 GPA and take 2 honors classes within the first 3 years of college.
