I’m a rising junior and have been playing on my school’s varsity soccer team (we don’t have JV) for all of high school and have been playing soccer for practically all my life. However, I’m very tempted to quit as it’s a huge time commitement and I hate it. I’m not nearly good enough to be scouted or get a scholarship, but I’m unsure whether I should because I feel like saying that I played 4 years of a varsity sport will look good for college. I don’t currently do any other activities but I’m a pretty good filmmaker and if I quit then I will have the extra time I need to start making films. Is being committed to a sport really as important as I think it is, or should I quit? (PS: Not sure if this relevant, but I’m a good student and will hopefully be applying to elite/Ivy League schools.)
If you hate it, quit. Schools don’t care what your activities are as long as you have a few. Better to have something you love than 4 years of soccer.
Forgot to mention: I will be head of film club next year and have been a member of finance club and mathletes since freshman year. Also starting next year I will be running a branch of a local charity with my friend.
You have plenty of activities. Plus, colleges want a well rounded student body more than they want an individual well rounded student. Film club, finance, mathletes, and your charity work will make you stand out to colleges more than soccer will!
And if you still want to have that “4 years of varsity” card to play, maybe try a different sport
