Hi everyone!

I just need some advice. This summer I am planning to take some classes that will help me with my goal of having my own business (selling my art online) at my local college. Looking at my schedule, I know I will be very busy. I only work 2-3 days a week, but I really don't like my job and would rather focus on my goal. The problem is I am living at home and paying $150 a month to my dad. I know he will understand if I tell him why I can't pay him the money for awhile. Other than that, I don't pay anything else. I don't have a car and I don't feel that I need one for now because I am living in a place with a good public transportation.

Is it a good idea to quit my job although I only work 2-3 days (10-15 hrs) a week?

Would you be able to cut back the number of hours you work without quitting the job?

Upsilamba, I am not sure if my boss will be happy if I tell her I could only work 2 or even one day. Some of my coworkers are working less too because of school or family or other job. My boss is not hiring anyone although we need more help badly. Last week, I told her I could only work one day because I have finals, and she said I need to ask my other co-worker to cover my shift, and I know they can’t or won’t. So, I really have no choice but to work or maybe just won’t show up at work.

I say give your boss an ultimatum either she lets you work less or she’ll lose you entirely. Obvioulsy your art business is the most important thing in your life and if it’s really your passion you should work towards it while you have the freedom that you do now. Soon you’ll have your own mortgage, bills, etc. and it will be much harder then than it is now for you to start a business. (especially one selling art)

Just quit.
You are young and can get a job somewhere else.
Your dad is family and if he understands, do it.
If this is something you want to do, you need to take these classes now before you have family/marital obligations that will hold you back.

Thanks nastynate0315 and embroglio. Now I feel more confident in my decision. I agree, I need to prioritize my business especially this time that I am still in college and my family have no other expectations on me except passing my classes.

10-15 hours a week is not a lot at all. If you can’t do well in school and work 15 hours a week at the same time then you probably aren’t fit for running your own business.

I’m sure he’ll be fine.
I mean doing your own business you have your own hours, and you learn to prioritize.
Going to school 15 hours and then working some crap job part-time is never fun, you aren’t motivated, and it is draining emotionally and physically (haha trust me, I know.)

AND worse comes to worse, if the business falls through, they can always return to the crap job :)

I work 15 hours a week and take a full time school load during the academic year. Yes, it can be tiring, but it is completely do-able. Going to school and working part time will teach you how to prioritize and manage time for schoolwork, paid work, socializing, etc. Working a “crap” job is never fun whether you are in school or not, but if it helps to give you some spending money and contribute to your education or housing, it means something. I would say give it a try and see how it goes.

If you’re planning on owning a business the best way to learn is to have a business job. Try finding a temporary retail job and observe how they conduct business.

if you quit your job, what then will you do for money to use the transportation or go shopping or whatever. I second cutting back but I dont agree with quiting entirely. Save your money.
