I’m a senior and got a job in August at a computer store on campus doing retail sales. I hate the job because I suck at customer service. I’ve been here 7 months because I wanted to challenge myself and improve job skills that I was weak at (customer service/sales/interpersonal skills). Although I think it helped me a lot I dread going in there. There are essentially 3 managers that can be cool 20% of the time but are mostly condescending. For instance, whenever I ask my manager a question (or anyone asks him) he just stares at me and then follows up my question with a patronizing question as if I’m doing something wrong. The store manager refers to us as “kids” which pisses me off so much too. There are literally 23+ y/o grad students working there, like are you serious? Also the Apple technicians who we have to work with on a daily basis will literally roll their eyes, sigh, or be rude to myself or other coworkers when customers come in. I’ve seen the nice sides of management and the techs but most of the time it’s a negative atmosphere. Plus to add to this I make minimum wage. I’ve never had this problem with a job before. I do enjoy my coworkers even though they are PC gamers/Reddit addicts and we have nothing in common, they’re still nice people. Anyway I’m kind of venting because I really want to quit. I asked my girlfriend but she doesn’t want me to quit so other feedback would be awesome.
Do you need the money? Can you get a different job? Generally, if you have other options, I’d quit. I don’t see the upside of staying.
I do and I don’t need the money. I have enough money right now for the rest of the year and I’ll have 2 more paychecks coming, albeit small, if I quit today. I do just because I don’t like having no money come in haha. And I don’t doubt that I could get another job making minimum wage on campus but since there’s not much time left until I graduate I think I’d just wait to get another job when I move back home.
Try this some time with a manager when you don’t have a question:
“Sometimes when I ask you a question you kind of stare at me and answer in a condescending manner. It makes me think like you don’t want me to ask questions. Is there another way you would like me to handle that?”
You could do that with the techs as well.
