Should I quit soccer?

I play varsity soccer for my high school. I really enjoy the sport: it's fun, it keeps me fit, and I've made friends through it. However, I've never really excelled at soccer. I sat bench my freshman year on the JV team, started JV as a sophomore but wasn't pulled up to varsity at the end of the year. This year, as a junior, I found myself sitting bench again, this time on varsity. I talked to my coach at the end of the season, and he was very honest with me, for which I'm appreciative. We came to these conclusions:

I play soccer at for one of the best programs in our state. Any where else in the region, he said I probably would have been a 3 year starter. Unfortunately that's not the case. Next year, our team is going to be loaded. There's really only one starting slot open, and he doesn't really see me getting it. Thinking realistically, I'm not sure I want to spend lots of time and money improving my game, when I'm not even sure I'll get the spot. Would I be better off pursuing other things I'm passionate about, or should I stick to soccer for my senior year?

How about switching to cross country and track? Soccer players are often extraordinary runners, so you won’t be starting from square one. It will keep you fit, give you some exciting new goals, and make you new friends.

Thanks for the response! Actually cross country is one of the reasons I’m debating quitting. I’ve never been able to play club soccer in the fall because of the cross country season. My soccer coach has suggested time and time again that I play club, but I’m the captain of the cross country team this year, so quitting is out of the question.

I know it can be frustrating not starting, but the question you have to ask yourself is do you still enjoy it? Do you still like being part of this team, even though you are not a major contributor? Do you value your teammates and the camaraderie of being on a great team?

Or can you spend that time sitting around doing something else? I would move on
