Should I re-take a 1570/1600?

Ok, here's the deal. I re-took the SAT once hoping to raise my 670 verbal and 690 writing to 700s and qualify for the 10K a year at Mudd.

I got:
800 M
770 V
670 W

I have an 800 Math II. Which means I'm 10 measly points away from getting 40k.

If you want to look at the rest of my app:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=230824

I e-mailed the Admissions rep who I interviewed with and he said the requirements are set in stone.

My parents will not receive any aid, but we're just barely affording a private college tuition room and board.

So Should I re-take, stand pat, or bag Harvey Mudd College altogether?

Since there is a very good reason to retake your SAT, you should take it. Usually there isn't much of a reason for 1570s to retake, but your case is different.

Totally agree with Mall. HM is an awesome school and if you go there and I go to Pomona we will have to meet up :)

Congrats on the awesome scores. Our math scores tied but your verbal slaughters me (690). I took writing by 60 at least :)

When we visited HMC this summer, they made it clear that they look at all three sections of the SAT. So, to look more attractive to them, it would be worth your while to try to bring up the writing score. If you got a 12 on the essay, you're just looking at grammar rules! Work from Barron's or the Blue Book. You have a month. You are not the only one looking for another 10-20 points.

Look at it this way: You could earn $40,000 for four hours' work. You'll never get paid like that again! (And, as a parent, I can't begin to tell you HOW MUCH your parents will appreciate your efforts!)

Good luck!

So, when should I take it, December or January?

december of course. its sooner

If apps are due by Jan. 15th, I would assume you have to take the December test, since only those scores used for application can count (i.e., you can't take it in May when you know you're accepted and then try to qualify for the scholarship). I'd check with HMC to be sure.

HMC said its ok to take the January test. I kind of think that extra time would be beneficial, after all the apps are done. However, this isn't one and done.

The 40,000 is conditional of getting into Mudd in the first place. Second, if I do score well, I only get to "use" the money if I go there in the first place. Does that seem likely when I'm applying to 9 other schools of "relatively" equal or greater caliber. Why should Mudd receive this special treatment?

This is just my crazy rant I have in my head.

Now, for Harvey Mudd, which is a school that I intent to apply to... I meet the eligilibility for the Harvey Mudd Merit Award, but is that a guaranteed $10,000 per year? The website only says a maximum of $10,000.

10,000 per year.

And mike, if you think there is a good chance of you coming here then you should retake it. Just study for that one section and don't worry about the other ones. Writing is easy to improve. With some practice you can ace the grammar section for sure and then hope that your essay turns out good (the essay is total BS).

I have the SAME STINKING PROBLEM. Oh my goodness, makes me so mad. I've got 800CR, 800W, 800 Math IIC, and a flippin' 740 Math on the SAT I! GRRR. I'm taking it again in January... I am so angry, so angry. I despise SAT math. Grar.
