Should I re-take these courses?

My history: I went into college back in 2003 as a pre-med student. Took bio, calc, and chem 1...earned a C in bio and chem, but earned Bs in the labs, received a W my first semester in calc, but earned a B when I retook it the next semester (only W I ever received). Switched majors as a sophomore and earned my bachelor's in Food and Resource Economics with a 3.49 GPA, received cum laude honors at graduation. I have been working since graduation, but not enjoying my career and am hoping to change back to medicine. Looked into nursing school, but know I am smart enough to do well in medical school. I matured a lot throughout college and after, so I know my mistakes in my early years were from too much partying and not going to class.

Presently, I am registered for some classes at the local city college, I know what pre-reqs I don't have and need. My question is should I retake the bio and chem class I got a C in? Should I try to get a masters in something? I know I have a decent GPA already and expect to try hard and do well in the rest of the pre-reqs. Do I need to retake the bio and chem classes or just go on from here. I will also have access to take some of these pre-reqs at the local university...need some advice.

Thanks!

If you are only applying to MD programs, I wouldn’t retake those classes. The grades would be averaged and not replaced. You’d be better off just continuing your pre-reqs and maybe take some extra upper division science classes.

If you are applying to DO programs as well, you should consider retaking those courses, as your grades will be replaced.

Additionally, take as many pre-reqs as you can at the local university.

Thank you very much…I’ve decided to just retake the chem, since I need a good foundation for the MCAT and Ochem, but go on with Bio. I appreciate the advice! Unfortunately, I am in California now and getting into the university classes is next to impossible b/c of the budget crisis. I’ll be taking this semester’s classes at the city college and hopefully I can get in next semester at the university.
