Should I really go to Bakersfield College, and can I do better than high school?

I’m 21 now, and have not been in any school since graduating high school (on time). I’ve been stuck, quite literally, I’ve done nothing since then, until I picked up and left to escape my rural prison. I ran out of my life savings before I could solidly stand on my feet, my parents wired me some to help me go to the next place I was going (I went to several different places, even leaving my state, Texas). I ended up at my uncle’s in California and have been here since September, I was not hired for any jobs, made no friends, and have accomplished nothing! I guess I really do need to go. I refused to go back to Texas, even if I’ll have more debt from out of state tuition (assuming I can’t get full FAFSA for it) I REFUSE to go back to Texas, California kicks it’s ass so hard, plus I don’t want to go back home, it’s too toxic.

I have already applied to go to Bakersfield College, but have parts to complete, but have to wait until tomorrow when I can call them because I need help with something. I plan on riding the buses 40 miles (that’s an option) down the mountains to there and back every day (I doubt staying in a dorm will be an option for me).

I somehow was allowed to graduate high school with a SUPER LOW GPA, 1.3. I didn’t really give any effort. I didn’t think it was important, and when I realized it was important (LITERALLY ONE WEEK BEFORE GRADUATION) it was too late.

Bakersfield College is open admission, but I still have to work better, and get some job to pay rent and to pay for education after what FAFSA covers. I CAN’T STAND being controlled, I want to, I must, become able to get a job making a lot of money (hopefully 6 figures minimum, you never know it could be 7) so I can fully support myself and NEVER have anyone control my life again. What about a girlfriend? If I’m with her she won’t be that bad! I will want her to control me in some ways  but not control my whole life.

I have been told by several people (and it seems like a safe route) that it is ok to choose a study that is not your passion, so you can obtain a well paying job, so you can pay the bills in life. And the more money you make, the easier it is to pursue your passions! But not all passions are profitable, and bills must be paid in life.

So can I do better in college than high school?

I want to get somewhere in my life, do something with my life, and have a purpose.

When I called my high school in Texas to ask for my GPA to put in my college application, after the lady gave it to me I heard her laugh, like I’m such an idiot and I’m applying for college?
