OK, as everyone knows... UIUC counts community college grades (even in high school) into overall GPA. I'm a high school senior and will be an Electrical Engineering student this fall. My problem is, I got a "C" in Differential Equations and a "B" in intro E & M in community college. I did good in exams but I missed too many quizzes and labs because the schedule conflicted with my high school classes & activities schedule. I thought they won't be counted in GPA; however the fact is UIUC counts them, and I can't choose not to transfer them...

Now I'm struggling, whether should I repeat these 2 classes in community college? The community college's policy is that they'll count only the new grades in GPA and exclude the old grades (well, those will still be shown on transcript). I'm confident to get "As" if I don't miss any assignments and quizzes... I also got "As" in Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra.

Should I just repeat them and get back my 4.0 (well, they'll still appear on transcript... the only happiness is the value of GPA) or should I leave them alone and give an explanation when applying graduate school (albeit I originally planned to retake MATH 441 Differential Equations analytic in UIUC...) ? If I take in UIUC, that "C" wouldn't be excluded...

THANKS FOR ALL REPLIES

It’s so tragic because I took AP exams before knowing all transferable courses must be transferred. So… I’ve wasted all money for taking AP exams :(

If you mean graduate school in EE, then if you get a 4.0 in your upper division courses, it is not that likely that they will care about those grades you got in community college courses in high school.

If you mean medical school, they want to know and will use all of your grades.

In either case, it is not likely that repeating those courses will be of significant benefit.

I’m not going to apply medical school, but the problem is UIUC requires me to send them and count them in overall GPA (UIUC has 3 kinds of GPA, 1. transfer, 2. UIUC, 3. combined) even I’m not a medical school person. I’m just wondering whether it’s worthy for me to repeat them in CC merely for a 4.0 instead of repeat them in UIUC and get a 3.0 combined for differential equations…

I know some schools don’t count them into GPA, and don’t even require transcripts from CC; in that case I wouldn’t consider repeating at all.

Why repeat them at all if you know the material and did not get a D or F grade in them?

Because the “C” and the “B” are from community college…

I’ve already made clear about UIUC’s policy. They said even the grades were excluded from GPA on community college transcript, on UIUC’s transcript, they’ll still average those excluded grades. Oh gosh.

Now I’m really afraid whether these 2 careless college courses taken in high school will severely damage my chance to get into a top graduate school even I remain a 4.0 in UIUC :(.

No they won’t. It is not worth it to retake courses with those grades. You ate going to be fine.
