Not friend friend. We met over facebook after I moved but went to the same middle and high school. Same activities, friends, style, etc. We get along great and are from the same country.
We're going to the same college in NY and I figure if we room together then it's a definite safety against a crazy roommate until we're adjusted. We both study hard, eat the same kinds of food, and we're both from the same super conservative community in asia.
It's a huge change for both of us and I think it would help to be with someone who knows where you're coming from.
Unfortunately, it means one of us living on the other's campus (three subways stops or a shuttle ride away.. not that far) but otherwise I mean, is it a good idea? I know you find the bad parts of people when you live with them but at least I know she's not a pothead, a klepto, or anything. (I don't smoke and have intense allergies to it)
and how do I suggest it to her?

I’d avoid it especially since the commute sounds like a huge hassle. Besides one of the cool parts of college comes from meeting people with different experiences.

Just tell your future roommate not to smoke in the room and explain that you’re allergic to it. If she doesn’t completely suck as a human being, she’ll respect that. If not, talk to your RA.
