I got a 5 on calc AB, so I know that I don't have to take the Math placement test during orientation test if I don't plan on taking 31A. But the thing is, if I skip right ahead to 31B, will I be able to keep up with the pace and understanding the stuff? Should I take 31A in fall even though I can skip out of it to prepare for 31B?

take 31B, 31A stuff you can just review a bit on you own since you'll have the calc book anyway, it is very good to get ahead in math so you don't expend the 2 years getting to 33B and incase you don't see a good lecture time in the future enrollments you can always take a quarter off for math

yes but the thing is, I'm a pre-bizecon major and the major only requires me to take 31A and 31B. AND I REALLY want to ace 31B, thus not screwing up my first quarter. So did anyone skipped 31A and still got an A in 31B?

my roommate did... just make sure you sign up with an easy professor it shouldnt be hard to get an A in 31B... I don't think 31A and 31B is that closely related anyway...

I advise that you take 31A. Since you got a 5 on Calc AB, you'll probably be able to get an A in 31A; that A will help significantly if you want to get into Biz Econ, and of course it will also help your GPA.

i guess it could be GPA boosting but I knew people that got 5 on AB test, thought 31A was gonna be a cruiseby and get average on all tests since pretty much everyone that got into UCLA took calculus in highschool...

if you think you had a solid understanding of AB, then take 31B. 31A is hardly a GPA booster, especially if you already know the material pretty well and can't find motivation to study it even more.

Thanks for the responses...can someone tell me though what's the difference between 31A and 31B? Are the stuff inter-related? I know that taking 31A can have a potential boost up my GPA, but I mean, I'm really not that good at math...I actually think that I only got a 5 because of the curve this year since the test was hard. :P

if I remember correctly 31A goes up to disc and shell methods, and 31B is integrate by parts and such

Thanks. So if I'm planning to take 31A, do I still need to take the math placement test again?

i am pretty sure you do, thats what they told us at orientation last year

another reason people haven't mentioned yet to take 31A is that you'll be in the regular sequence. There are many more sections of 31A offered in the fall than 31B or 31C. So you'll have more flexibility in putting together your schedule, and the same for your 2nd quarter of math.
