Should I retake a course for transfer admission?

I’m a junior in college and I’m trying to transfer to Georgia tech next year as an industrial design major. They require to complete calculus 1, physics 1, and English 1 and 2 before applying for the school. I already took calculus 1 from my previous school and got B in it. I was originally biology major so I took bunch of other science classes like chemistry and biologies for the three past years. I don’t really have many science or math classes to take at this point, and I only need to take physics 1. Do you think it’d be better if I just retake cal 1 and get an A in second attempt? if I retake it the second attempt will replace my first grade but both of the courses will count in my GPA. They also look at math/science GPA as well as grades in required courses during admission, so would it be better to retake cal 1?
When I look at the school website, I also had to take cal 2 for degree requirement at tech. I mean cal 2 will be calculated as my math/science gpa too, but it’s not a required course like cal 1 for the admission purpose.
Should I stick to improving my grade on required course or should I just move on to cal 2 in case I get accepted? any advice or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Do not retake a class that you earned a B in. Retaking is for classes that you have failed.

Move on to calculus 2.

wouldn’t it look better to admissions though, if I tried and get a better grade in it? im not sure

No, you will look like a grade grubber who didn’t do your best the first time around.

Well okay, rude. You do have to do well in those required courses because admission mainly look at those grade during admission. I already got all B in my english 1 and 2. I assume it wouldn’t hurt to have at least one A in my required course considering Im applying to quiet prestigious school like gatech.

@CCtoAlaska and I did my best to get a good grade in that course. what’s wrong with getting a better grade in second attempt ive seen ppl retaking courses without failing it.

Prestigious schools are not impressed by students who get an A the second time that they take the same course. For a school at the level of Georgia Tech, calculus 1 is not a difficult class. They have mathematics classes that are a lot more difficult.

What school are you currently at?

@DadTwoGirls So would it look bad that I got B in calculus 1 then? because I didn’t even ace it the first time around? I go to UGA right now.

A B in calculus1 won’t look bad. A D or an F that you did indeed need to retake would look bad.

Stop worrying about the B grades that already are on your transcript. Focus on getting the best grades possible from here on.

If you are currently a junior, it is highly unlikely that you are going to accepted to or be able to transfer to Ga. Tech. Remember you will have to attend and be in residence at Ga. Tech for at least 2 years in order to get a degree.

@sybbie719 I don’t think that’s necessarily true. I’ve seen people who have over 100 credits and got accepted to Tec, which mean they are almost senior based on the number of credits they had. My friend was 3rd year at community college, and had to spent extra year to finish required course to get accepted o the school. and she did get accepted.
Not all credits will be transferred because GaTech has their own class structure and I haven’t taken any major related courses yet. I dont know where you heard that from. Even if it’s true, I’ll be spending more than 2 years once I get accepted due to my major.

Like it’s not required by admsisosn at tech.

There is a difference between transferring from community college where the highest degree you can get is an associates and attending a 4-year school where you have junior status. In addition, the community college probably has articulation agreements with the Georgia public colleges.

my friend went to was 4 year college program where you can get an actual degree. it wasn’t a traditional 4 years college. it’s new school called Georgia Gwinnett college, look it up if you want.

I called the admission office and they said it doesn’t matter which status you are in when you are transferring from another school. Last year accepted students had over 60 credits.

But anyways, I don’t think I’m going to retake cal 1 when I already have B. The main thing admission look at is my overall gpa and all my grades are going to be averaged out anyways.
